On tap at Brouhaha. Even if I’d love to love to Charlevoix’s beers, it really doesn’t come easily... Let’s stick to this beer... Heavily sweet and alchoolic, some spices and fruit notes, and hop bitterness being somewhat shattered by the difficult-to-approach-cognac-oversweet maltiness. Really a sipper... Heavy, heavy, heavy. Maybe a part of the problem lies in the carbonation...

listed as Biere de Saison at the brewpub. Dark amber pour with a sticky bubbly beige head. Aroma of hops, citrus, some grapefruit, and some sweet lemon. Flavor is nice, but very sweet, and thick. Some nice citrucy notes, but man this is a thick beer. It seems quite heavy, but the hops are not large enough for a DIPA. i would call this a heavy IPA.

A dark reddish amber ale with a thin lacing white head. A nice pinhey hops aroma, with treacle and caramel. In mouth, a good malt with c-hops , menthol, warming alcohol. Rich and warming . On tap at Brouhaha, March 28 2009.

(Rating #2375)

On tap at the Brouhaha, bright amber-orangeish color, with a white head, resinous, fruity, floral hop nose with a crunchy sweet honeyed pale, toasted malt accent, with a mild citrus leafiness note in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a sweet toasted, caramelized malt, fruity peachy character, with a flowery hop leafy, candied orange, manderin peel fruitiness, with a mild warmth mouthfeel, leading towards a fruity, hop leafy bitterness finish.

On tap at Brouhaha. The color is golden with a thin off white head. The taste is very very sweet like candy. It has a good variety of hops that gives it its special taste. I also find in the aroma and taste a sweet salty feeling to it. This is what I like about Microbrasserie Charlevoix, it is never boring.

Sampled on tap at Brouhaha. Pours a clear golden color with a thin white head. Aroma of resinous, earthy hops with assertive sweetness and malt. Good flavor of earthy, resinous hops, malt, some alcohol and strong sweetness, bitterness is felt in the end. Not bad, but definitely too sweet for my tastes and for the style.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Portly, honeyed cereals coat the spicy and earthy hoppiness until a portentous bitterness plows through the finish of this dextrinous American-style Strong Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam protects the clear caramel amber.
-The nose lacks hop character for a beer billed as a Double IPA.
-A fruity nature moves from oranges to passionfruit.
-Alcohol is felt in the flavor profile.
-Like all Charlevoix, this is extremely clean and classy, but this one might disappoint those looking for a standard example of the style. -A more recent batch (January 2009) was full on grapefruit, but still sweeter than the average I2PA. A clever Barley Wine, this is.

On tap at the brewpub, at Brouhaha and at Vices et Versa.
