Beer #1 at the 2013 Winter Warmer Montreal, on February 23, 2013. Very dark brown, medium head. Barley aroma with chocolate, hints of raisins. Barley dry taste with hints of coffee, a little acidic, coffee bitterness. Semi funky!

My Bottom Line:
A tight blend of roasty and vinous flavors leads to mild tartness and coffee-like bitterness in this fun, challenging number.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam surrounds the dark brown haze.
-The body is slender and the flavor profile of a medium intensity.
-This should make for fun food pairings.
-This was as expertly rendered as all Charlevoix brews, but the flavor profile just didn’t do it for me. Chicory and Chardonnay, really?

On tap at Hivernale des Brasseurs.

On tap at the brewpub. Opaque brown pour, dense beige head. Aroma is fruity, notes of peach, light leather and oak. Taste is slightly sour, fruity, buttery oak notes, tannic, winey, porter character is quite hidden, a bit of green apple that lingers. Palate is well carbed, silky and smooth. Decent barrel aged beer but not any better than the regular porter 85.

On tap at Hivern’ale 2013 Gatineau. Aroma: Very molasses with notes of bourbon. A bit of coffee and chocolate. Visual: Black, few head, nice lacing. Taste: Notes of molasses, chocolate and coffee are coming back. Very typical. Mouth feel is too thin. Served too cold

Draft: Poured a clear dark color porter with a light dark foamy head with light retention and not much lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some light oak and very subtle Brett. Taste is also dominated by notes of roasted malt with light dry aftertaste with some oak and very subtle Brett notes. Body is a bit light with low carbonation. Interesting and more easily drinkable then what I would have expected.
