COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Microbrasserie Charlevoix offers us this great IPA brewed with champagne yeast. Why this name? Simply, the brewer, Nicolas Marrant, spent all the hops he had on hand!

On tap at the Festibiere d’Hiver Gatineau. Pours amber with a small white top. Aroma is a sweet citrus hop. Taste is sickly, resinous, small citrus hop flavour with an intense hop biterness that is not well balanced with malt. Fairly uninspiring.

On draft at Bateau de nuit. Mostly clear golden, with sediments. White head. Smells somewhat fruity. Tastes mostly like citrus, oranges and the like. Finish packs quite a heavy hoppy punch: grapefruit, lemon, lime, herbs, flowers...you name it. Body is average, mouthfeel is creamy. Excellent beer.

Sampled at the 1st Festibiere d’hiver in Gatineau, Quebec. This one was hazy golden colour with an off-white head that had decent lace. Good spiciness in the nose. Nice dry mouthfeel. Fruity aftertaste with nice yeast. The finish is pleasantly dry-hopped. This was a great experience from Charlevoix (as I always enjoy their brews).

En fût au Festibière d’hiver de Gatineau. 11%. Beaucoup plus belge que les autres IPA de Charlevoix. Couleur jaune or, très légèrement voilée, mousse blanche. Arôme d’agrumes de levure, malt. En bouche, agrumes, malt, alcool. Finale pas très amère. Bonne.

Lubiere (6988) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 1, 2011
A reddish amber IPA with a thin light moka head. In aroma, sweet treacle malt, with white grapes, vinous and smooth, veering into barley wine territory. In mouth, a sweet candy treacle malt, lightly vinous, oily mouthfeel, smooth British hops, quite nice but not a hop bomb. On tap at Vices et Versa, April 22 2011.

on tap at l’autre oeil. hazy dark golden with a small but thick white head, good lacing. malty, grainy, some caramel malts, fruity - oranges, with a complex hop profile - citrusy, floral and lightly grassy-piney. balances very well the semi-sweetness, just a little warming alcohol, nicely hidden. average carbonation, medium to full body. nothing really noticeable as for the use of champagne yeast though. very good brew.

Eructoblaster (2122) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 5, 2011
On tap at L’Autre Oeil (Gatineau, QC). Hazy amber body with a thin off-white creamy head. Well balanced malty/hoppy aroma with fruity and caramel hints. Alcohol is perfectly hidden. Sharp, complex hoppy taste with malty, grainy, and coriander notes. Ends with a long, strong bittersweet finish. Very enjoyable!

In short: A harsh and boozy Double IPA. Just Ok.
How: Cask at Benelux, Montreal
The look: Cloudy dirty-dark-orange body topped by a very small off-white head
In long: Nose is tangy and coniferous with some alcohol fumes. Taste is strangely low on malts which makes the alcohol come out strong. I find most Charlevoix IIPAs to a be a bit too malty/sweet (too barley-wine-ish) so I was surprised to taste this one a bit low on malts. Maybe it was the cask conditioning. Anyway, basic toasted caramelized malts, coniferous + orange-ish hops and too much alcohol. Overall really harsh. I’m not sure I can talk about bitterness in the finish, more like a booze bite. Maybe the cask wasn’t the proper vehicle for this beer. Drank a glass of this on a very busy night at Benelux for the launch of a beer book. You may have seen me, I was the one looking very creepy. But know that I just act very creepy so people will stop showing me picture of their kids.

Tap at Brouhaha. Triple IPA: I had Chouffe Houblon in mind. I got something that I thought was more of a barley wine. Caramel and acrid notes in the sirupy heavily malted base somewhat balanced by an intense piny and sharp hoppiness. I regreted my choice. But I finished my glass. So, it’s drinkable, even enjoyable, but maybe not as good as other MBC products.
