When I walked into Charlie and Jake’s I did not expect to have anything like this. I expected to simply taste their repertoire and move on. Todd opened this one up from the bottle, and I was amazed at the nose from just opening the bottle. The experience was filled with "wow"s. Pours a particulate-filled brandy-amber color with a slim white head. Nose is brandy, raisins, dates, figs, vanilla, caramel, toffee, some booze, and candied apples. Flavor is as good if not better than the nose, except for some noticeable booze. Brandy, dates, plums, rummy raisins, some burn, caramel, toffee, and so much more. This one could age for a while. Medium-bodied with depth and complexity that it could lend out for extra cash. Very enjoyable, and a definite sipper.

Sample via 1.5 year (or more) old bottle pour at the Charlie and Jake’s brewpub with a big thanks to the assistant brewer for supplying the sample. It pours amber-brown with copper edges and tiny bits of sediment along the bottom all supporting what amounts to . . . well really no head at all. The aroma sends out smooth notes of dates, prunes and raisins along with a nice layer of caramel candy as well as a bit of booze at the end of the draw. The taste is smooth and starts with prunes, figs, dates and raisins then it picks up a modest amount of caramel candy, molasses and sweet maltiness. This just melds together into a very pleasing finish and seeming like a smooth subtle 9% ABV and not the massive 15%+. Man, this is only going to get better over the next several years. Fantastic English barleywine right here in FL.

(Rating #2265)

At the brewpub, based on Josh Oakes recommendation. I think the 15% label is too low. When they say its 30 proof, its a hint. On the other side you do not taste the booziness until it knocks you over. Unfiltered, it reminds me of a Belgian strong ale. Yeast there, adding to above average mouthfeel. Served somewhat too cold.

Draft… Cloudy, burnt caramel-colored ale. No head. Caramely, fruity aroma. Full-bodied with soft carbonation. Warming alcohol, fruity esters and malty caramel. Sweet, but not cloyingly so. Bittersweet finish with a mild alcohol burn. Nice.

Pours a dark caramel brown, with a smallish light tan head. Smells of dark sweet caramel malts, dark fruits, some bready yeast, and alcohol. The flavor is pretty much the same. The alcohol presence was definitely noticeable most of the way through. Dark fruits and malts coincided to formulate most of its flavor identity, and it seemed like a pretty standard barley wine. was definitely the best ofthe four they had on tap when I visited.
