UPDATED: FEB 24, 2010 22oz bottle, purchased at Petaluma Market. Pours a very dark chocolate color; significant, creamy medium-tan head with great retention and lacing that lasts; beautiful pour. Lots of roasted / lightly charred malts and bitter chocolate in the aroma; not a huge overt hop character here, but plenty of bitterness coming from the chocolate and char; very dry; quiet yeast character; mouthwatering, dry, and pleasantly bitter. Medium mouthfeel: lots of bitter chocolate and roasted maltiness here, with some pleasant citrus and mineral bitterness quietly balancing out the prominent malt core; nicely bitter, creamy texture in the mouth, highly sessionable; beautifully made; it just doesn’t quite set my heart on fire hedonistically (a more charismatic yeast character would help); very tasty overall. Lasting finish of milk chocolate, roasted malts, and hints of vanilla; not nearly as roasted / bitter as the core; nicely balanced, moderately dry ending.

Pours thick and heavy, richly black, whipped creamy bronze head. Sweet molasses roast aroma. Dense chewy black malt, smoky middle, creamy earthy finish, little pine.

Off the charts black appearance - with a gigantic rocky head and oozing lace. Char on the nose with soft creaminess and slight caramel. Very roasty for a schwarz (not a bad thing), lots of charred malts and coffee, followed by a quick middle and spritzy finish with some wrigleys gum at the swallow. Lingering roast. You want to just have another taste - very seductive...and delicious.

Bottle via Bonster via pistolpete. Overall a lighter stout that is heavily infused with both hops and coffee. Nice to see a bio-regional brew, still with atll its pomp and circumstance on the label it falls short of excellent. A semi watery finsh undulates about the unbalanced coffee and hops.

Bottle from my beerguy. Black-brown body with a dark tan head. Big roasted malt aroma, cocoa, and a hint of scorched coffee. Heavy roasted bitter flavor, smoke, burnt grains, and cola-ish taste. Decent.

Pours very dark - pitch black and opaque - with a medium-sized tan head that doesn’t last long but leaves streaks of lace. The aroma is firm with toast and fresh-ground coffee. There is a hint of earthiness and light notes of molasses sweetness. The flavor starts bready with toast and coffee - a bit mildly flavored compared to the big aroma. A firm earthy bitterness enters at midpalate. Firm clean bitter finish with strong notes of coffee - very bitter. The mouthfeel is light-medium in body with soft and creamy carbonation and a subtle astringency in the back. Overall, a pleasant session beer - much like a nice dry stout but a little bolder.

Ridiculously dark pour with a big tan head. Aroma is chocolate, earthy hops, and roasted malt. Flavor is heavily roasted, lots of hops in the background for the style. I fail to see how this is a black lager, but whatever. Finishes dry, almost chalky.

Bottle. Black pour with a thick, frothy dark brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, caramel, and hops. Taste is strong coffee and chocolate with burnt cookies, roasted malts, caramel, hops and smoky notes. Body is medium and rather creamy and smooth. Really nice mouthfeel on this beer. Ends with more roasted malt, some burnt coffee, bittersweet chocolate, caramel, lighter hops and smokiness. Rather nice beer!
