Dedicated to Crustaceans
The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

Bottle. Moderate grain for the malt, light cooked lemon for the hops, and dough for the yeast, with a hint of alcohol. Head is small to average, frothy, white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is sparkling clear light amber. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic, and heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, a carbonation between soft and lively, and finishes heavily alcoholic and sticky finish. Bold and powerful, but I think it’s more DIPA then Barley Wine.

750 ml bottle from Imbibe Wine. Nose is light toffee, golden raisins, and bubblegum. Clear orange tinged yellow with a medium off white head. Flavor is moderately sweet with mild contrasting bitterness. Finishes with a hint of bitterness. I would probably love this aged in bourbon barrels.

Bomber. Pours a burnt orange with an off white head and hoppy, malt, toffee aroma. Taste is strong, alcohol and dried fruit notes which lead into hoppy, carmael, bready malt notes leading to a very sweet finish.

Pours a hazy deep golden color with a lighter, white head. Aroma is of hops, darker fruit, plum, citrus, some booze, and malts. Heavy and sweet palate. Still seems a little "hot". Flavors are of in your face hops. Wow. Also present are malts, booze, citrus, pine, and malt. Leaves a strong hop and booze finish. I like it, but I can only imagine how good this would have been if I waited a year of two.

Clear golden amber pour with ring of white head. Sweet hoppy honey character with a decent dose of abv heat. Interesting, but too sweet for my palate.

650 ml bottle from Premoer Gourmet. Pours a murky dull golden colour with modest-sized whiteish head. Aroma is biscuit, honey, lots of citric/tropical fruit hops and some floral notes. Flavour is sweet with honeyed biscuit, pineapple, lemon zest, apple, flowers, pine and alcohol. Some boozy warmth in the finish. Medium plus body. Nice.

Hazy orange color with a small, white head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus fruits, floral hops, light fruit notes, sweeter toffee malts, and light alcohol. Taste of citrus, stone fruit, toffee malts, and spicy, alcohol in the finish.
