The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

It poured a cloudy golden color with an off-white head. The aroma was of apple, malts and some hops. The taste was mainly of a barleywine with a Double IPA in the backend. Way out there, but worth a try.

Pours a slightly hazy light amber slightly darker than gold. Normal head volume, lacing and retention. Nice nose of tropical hops (mango) with hints of citrus (orange) coupled with a slight spiciness. As it warms, biscuit and apricot are also noted. Medium body with a smooth texture. Below normal carbonation with very little effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is intense, fairly complex but not balanced. It begins with a richly sweet blend of fruit - primarily apricot with notes of orange, mango and caramel. Caramel comes to the forefront as the hops fade approaching the middle. In the middle, alcohol attacks with an astringent vengeance and detracts from what would have been an outstanding flavor profile. The finish is a slow fade of residual sweetness and astringent alcohol. A moderate alcohol burn is present on the back of the throat, a bit of tongue numbness and pucker.

Bottle (bomber). Poured cloudy, orange with a nice white head and spotty lacing. Aroma of citrus fruit and mats. Taste of booze, malts, maybe some clove and some hops. Dry bitter finish. Enjoyable.

From a bottle. Honey and hay aroma and mead looks, no head, this thing is a punch in the taste buds with huge malt flavours and a strong citrus after-taste. Not for the faint of heart.

Pours a copper color with a thin white head. Aroma is caramel, citrus, and pine. Flavor is dominated by pine and citrus, with some caramel and a boozy finish. Has a syrupy body feel. I get more of an imperial ipa, but the malty caramel does complicate things. Pretty good, but perhaps too boozy.

This beer is a beautiful mess. It has no clue what it wants to be and taste awsome yet disappointing. I swear it’s a limbic IPA.......... Hazey gold micro floaties every where. This has nothing to do with barleywine. It’s a mother fucking T - Rex. Why do I hit harsh limbic like tartness in every sip. Lemon, some caramel, What the hell is this. Vannilla?? Sweetness builds the more you drink. I hate and enjoy this beer. My burps taste like hops. Man this is harsh. I don’t regret maybe I do buying this.

Bottle. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. 11.6%. Hazy, dark gold. Messy, filmy, bubbly, white head. Very fruity, strawberry, ripe tomato, nectarine goodness. Some vanilla infused white chocolate. Really unusual, and completely delicious aroma. Taste is white chocolate sweet, turning spicy dry, and spicy bitter. Palate is soft, airy, chewy, and boozy, although not the tune of 11 odd percent. Finishes long, rich, spicy vanilla custard, get it down your neck, chewy bitter. Lovely. Loads going on. Love that ripe tomato thing. Smells fantastic.

Poured into a Rogue shaker. Light amber color with a mild cream colored head that dissipates. Aroma is very citrusy with some resinous hops. Flavor is more complex than the aroma suggests. Caramel malt notes along with a bunch of citrus, resinous hops, some alcohol, and some faint dark fruit notes. Barleywine + IPA makes sense! Interesting palate - thick, oily, sticky, and a touch fizzy, and it all works in beautiful harmony! This thing really is a mix of everything. Overall this is quite good and very drinkable for the ABV. I think Rogue may have pioneered a new category IIPA’s and DIPA’s move over, Barleywineish Imperial IPA sortas are set to take over as the next big trend!
