The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

10oz on tap at Half Cut. Clear orange color. Thin off-white head. Leaves decent lace. Bready sweet malt, some pine, peppery citrus. White grape. Moderate-plus sweet taste, light to moderate bitter. Some alcohol warmth, but no burn nor bite. Kind of drinks like a bigger, heavier DIPA with a big bready sweet malt component. Grapefruity hop. Big body. Smooth, kind of crisp lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Solid DIPA (DIPA?) but the big bready malt sweetness kind of brings it down. I look forward to trying this same batch again 6 months from now (sarcasm). Hides the alcohol decently well I think, but definitely maltier and sweeter though.

Draught at the Rogue Taproom, Portland, OR. Cloudy golden colour with a tiny off-white head. Sweet malt, grassy and fruity hops, mild bitterness and sweet malty notes in the aroma. The flavour is super strong... sweet malt, bitter hops and some alcohol. Resiny hops really... and sweetness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Rogue in Newport. Hazed gold body with a fine white head. Beautiful glowing, rich-colored appearance. Straight up pineapple juice tropical fruit aroma, very phenolic and spicy. Lots of pure orange juice pulp with a thick and chewy and sweet body balanced by a lot of bright citrus acids. Full bodied with warming alcohol. Seems I exhale fumes but it still seems just short of what I call "boozy". Rich, sweet and bitter but the yeast saves it - provides a nice roundness and fullness. Maybe the closest beer to Gänstaller Ocator in terms of tropical fruit / pineapple expression, funny enough.

750 from Wegman’s. Pours turbid orange with minimal off-white hjead. Nose is orange marmalade, hops, tannins. Tastes rich, even somewhat cloying, perhaps, with heavy orange marmalade notes, hops, peach, and an overall finishing sweetness. Well hidden alcohol, but lightweights need not apply.

Bottle consumed at Cropredy, Fairports Annual Reunion Festival 2015, Thurs 13th, shared with Craig. A mid/warm gold beer with a white filmy head. Really oily, silky, syrupy, very busy with lots going on here. This is very hoppy and therefore I can see the IPA connection but also it does lean towards Barley Wine in fact I think it’s sits there more so for me. I like this, ok it’s fiercely sweet but there is bags of flavour, juicy hops, toffee, fruit, it’s all in here. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 3.9

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Surprisingly light golden body, with a white foamy cap. Aroma is white grapefruit and metal shavings with boozy undertones. The palate opens with a wave of metal and pineapple, then surges into an acrid, aspirin-like bitterness. The finish is astringently dry with a residue of metal and an alcoholic warmth. I did not care for this the more I drank, but Grippitis didn’t mind it. Parksy was somewhere in between.

Sampler @ brewpub.
Pours clear pale golden color with no head. Aroma of fruits, alcohol, grass and toffee. Flavour of alcohol, lemony fruits, hay and toffee. Could used some maltier body, alcohol comes through too much. More like an IIPA.

Draught at Rogue Hall. Nose of coconut, pineapple, citrus hops, orange and honey. Honey golden color, oily, with lace. Sweet honey flavor, citrus, hot alcohol, grapes, cherries, spicy. In malt and yeast it is somewhat like a tripel, but hopped like a IIPA. Thick flavor, big hops and alcohol. Full body. A fun beer.

marcus (7817) - Sacramento, California, USA - SEP 7, 2014
Bottle shared by oRos. Pours cloudy blonde with a transient off-white head and a fruity aroma. There is an uncarbonated light fruit flavor with a dry finish and a warm alcohol trail Certainly not a typical barleywine in that the mouthfeel is not thick and the flavor lacks sweetness. Still a pretty good beer.

Draught as "New Crusty Barleywine" @ Rogue Distillery and Public House, Portland
Aroma is quite light with some fruits and malt. Flavour has alcohol, some fruits and hops. Very dry and somerhat leathery finish with lots of gooseberry bush. Too much alcohol here.
