On tap at Pony Bar. Beautiful black with creamy tan head. Roasty with slight earthiness: a mix of dirt and pine hops. The body is a bit odd: creamy but somewhat devoid of flavor. Mild but enjoyable.

On tap at The Ginger Man - Manhattan, NY. Plain and even roast aroma. Flavors are good, but this could use a little more snap and a little less sweetness for me. Not bad. I think if you’re into the sweeter edge of stoudts with the breadth of complexity that comes with that sweetness, than this is the stout for you. I found it a little harder to work through.

Draft at Pony with Andrew, Brendan, Streets and Baron. Pours a dark black body with soapy soda head. Aroma is light chocolate, roast, bready and some strange saltiness. Mouthfeel is ultra thin, on a blind taste I would have pinned this as a porter. The flavor contains notes of light chocolate, roast, sweet malts, caramel. Easy to drink.

On tap at Pony w Andy, James, Streets and Baron. Nice-looking black pour with mocha-chocolate colored head and rocky, unevenly sized bubbles. No lacing. Aroma is creamy chocolate and peanut butter. Mouthfeel is smooth and I have to agree with James in that it is more like a porter. Medium-bodied and drinkable. Aftertaste is sweet out of nowhere although it does not last long. One of the better Chelseas I have had.

Growler from my local Whole Foods. Pours black with a thick, super pretty chocolate colored head. Aroma of roasted malt, charred malt, salty pretzel, and dark chocolate. Flavor is very roasty and charred with salty pretzel as well. Also an odd after taste in this one, can’t quite put my finger on. Perhaps a little acidic and chemical-y. I thought it was going to be ok, but as I continued to drink, it just started tasting odder and odder. 7/4/5/3/10 [2.9/5]

On tap at Chelsea Brewing Co, New York on 28 July 2011. Impenetrably black (dark enough to write with); light brown foamy head quick to decay, and sinking temporary lacing. Intense roast malts aroma. Liquid of roast barley; coffee, fresh cookies. Aftertaste continues this rich mix with the introduction of a citric note. Zingy texture, very good.
