4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 JoeMcPhee (6965) - Toronto, ON, - DEC 21, 2006
2004 version. Tap at Barcade. Pitch black with a creamy brown head. Sweet dark chocolate aroma. Strong coffee roastiness with a lovely earthy/herbal character as well. Dark fruitiness in back. Quite different from more recent editions of this brew, where the heavy roast is more on display. Dark chocolate flavour with licorice and coffee character but what stands out most is the strong dried fruit throughout. Plummy and cherryish. Moderate roast and moderate bitterness. Rich texture, creamy and sweet. Warming softens everything bringing out more milk chocolate and dried fruit. Soft herbal bitterness. Very tasty.

just a wonderful flavor of chocolate with spices (imagine for yourself as they are not overly apparant) a in a fresh malty base that brings visions of a perfect roasted malt....that is chocolatey. sprite soda finish on the tongue with a dash of root. dark brew, smooth and silky with substantial but not too thick substance to it. perhaps sweet, perhaps hoppy. a very enjoyable 20 ounce portion served perfectly at gingerman NYC.

(Old BA rate - cask)
Deep, dark black color; with a very thin bubbly light tan head; very dense looking. Dark fruits, almost a hint of raisins; light roastiness; deep, rich sweetness in the nose. Lightly roasty; bittersweat chocolate; not as sweet as in the aroma. Thicker, full MF; slick; not really any carbonation to speak of; very awesome stuff on cask.

On draft at the Stag’s Head in NYC. Opaque black. Gorgeous full brown head. This beer instantly makes you hope the beauty is not only skin deep.
Massive chocolate and roasted malts on the nose. Coffee notes as well.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slick, viscous texture overriding the taste, surprisingly a little thin.
Palate of roasted malts and coffee - nothing of the chocolate from the aroma. This is a good stout, but I was led-on at the beginning to hope for more.

Cask @ Chelsea’s Brewing Co. in NYC this past weekend. Pours a dark black body with small off white head. Aroma and flavor both have roasty and coffee characteristics.

Draft at the Tiger. Poured midnight black. Hoppy, chocolate malt nose. Similar flavor, with great hop malt balance. By far one of the best beers out of Chelsea.

On tap at Rattle N Hum. Pours pitch black with a reddish-brown head. Smells mildly of baker’s cocoa, malt, cream, and hops. Tastes of each with a bit of red chili in the flavor and tart cherry on the finish. Nice.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 mouse725 (83) - Albany, New York, USA - APR 5, 2009
On tap at Rattle n Hum. Agree with andersand on being more like an "imperial porter" than a stout. Very smooth flavour, with some nutty roast and nowhere near enough bitterness. Lots of chocolate flavour and hints of mocha. Big alcohol taste too. Glad I tried it b/c I like Chelsea brews, but I’ll stick with the Black Hole XXX stout.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 andersand (490) - Malmö, SWEDEN - MAR 17, 2009
Kinda flat, dead and too british (for my taste) imperial stout with somewhat too soft roasted flavour alongside some milky notes. More like a imperial porter. Sweetness is high, bitterness low and I really missed some edgy roasted notes and a more lively body. Favour-wise, ok though.

(Draught) Pours a black body with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted malt, light ash, and coffee. Flavor of roasted grain, chocolate, caramel malt, and coffee with a dry finish.
