UPDATED: OCT 6, 2003 Eastern Block beers often taste a little, how shall I say,...weird. And this is no exception. A metallic flavor semi-hides the alcohol. Pretty heavily carbonated. Mine did not have the large head experienced by others. Not enjoyable due to its crisp, dry nature and aforementioned weirdness.

Sampled from bottle. Pours hazy gold with a scattered white head. Aroma is unpleasantly sour. Flavor is balanced and dominated by pils malt. Metallic finish brings a grimace to my face. Light-bodied, moderately carbonated. Typical industrial lager.

Interesting head. Starts out tall & bubbly, becomes slender but creamy, then turns to pond scum, all in about a minute’s time. The aroma is grainy and sweet, covered by an herbal bitterness and pencil erasers. The flavor contains a toasty malt coupled with a corny sweetness that turns somewhat metallic towards the finish, which is an oddly bitter, sticky event. I wish these folk brewed a mocne.

Chill-hazed golden with a trickle of carbonation and a large but fast white head that settles scummy. Aroma finds stale pink bubblegum to start before powdery grains with a light floral quality that gets harsh and herbal as it warms. A thick, malty palate with syrupy-sweetness greeted me in the flavor, fully covering the alcohol assault I had expected. DMS quickly follows turning the sweetness to corn syrup with alcohol creeping in later. A sour finish hangs in the throat. Not too great, but better than the <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/chernomor-gold/2 />

Pours a clear amber with a feeble white head. Nose was bearly perceptible but held a hint of sweetness and alcohol. Slightly fizzy but still watery and thin. The flavor was almost imperceptible notes of bubblegum and alcohol.

22oz bottle. A clear gold color, well-carbonated and sporting a white head. Early perfumy aroma before a sweet malty flavor matched with early mellow hops. Overall, a nice pale malt sweetness. Drinkable.

This has kind of an interesting taste going on. Malt very present, sweet. Hops not so much. Eastern European brews are running my life! So many 16 oz bottles and cans for cheap. I’m poor and can’t resist

For some reason, I have a bizarre fascination with the beers of Eastern Europe even though they’re seldom memorable. This is another typical pale lager for the region. It does pour quite a nice glowing golden. The head is initially white and fluffy but diminishes a tad to quickly for my taste. Nose is very bready with a strange sort of tang to it. Sweet and sluggish on the palate with a bit of chemical bitterness in the finish. I just can’t get into this. Sorry.

Pigfoot (2267) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - OCT 3, 2004
Color’s a clear yellow, head a full billowy white. Aroma is soft, dry, notes of flowers, straw, little else. Mouthfeel is smooth, texture and body are light. An underlying sweetness pervades the palate, leaving a pleasant, unobtrusive finish. Indistinct hop presence, just enough malt, turning out tasty, nicely balanced, easily consumed beer. And by far the best Ukrainian pilsener this old suds-snoot’s ever had.

(Bottle) Pours a clear yellow with a large white head. Aroma of grain and straw, reminds me of growing up on the farm. Not a bad flavor for a pale lager. I could even drink this one warm without making faces. I couldn’t say that for most pale lagers.

Light white, quickly fading head, good bubble action, light golden appearance. Slight fresh water lake aroma, not unpleasant. Has a decent balanced lager flavor. No presence of corn adjuncts or a strong presence of alcohol that some of these Eastern Euro lagers seem to have. Has a little bit of a honey sweetness in the back end; ok mouthfeel for a lager. Tastes about like a cheap American regional. Overall, not bad.
