amber hefe not unlike the wignpen amber hefe in looks and flavour. the head fizzled for me but was probably the glassware i had at my sister in law’s homely fitzroy flat. fruity nose more stonefruits than banana - peaches let’s say, wheaty bready stuff, heavier malt whiffs than usual for a hefe. in the mouth nutrigrain malt - edgy and biscuitty - pleasant orange fruits finish - orange, peach, mango - plus toast. carbo too low. too sweet and rich for a hefe, not zingy enough for me. but pleasant enough.

bottle, brewtopia06. murky amber with a decent, lasting head. plenty of clove and vanilla in the aroma. quite sweet, hints of sherbet and vanilla, perhaps a touch on the cloying side but quite a good affort by aussie hefeweizen standards

16 Apr 2006 - Fruit hop aroma. Cloudy brown colour, good head and good suds lacing. Fruit & hop flavour. Finishes with a strange hoppy bubblegum aftertaste.

Poured cloudy amber with a generous head. Lots of banana in the aroma, some toffee notes. The flavour is bit of the bitter side and is sort of dusty. Way too much fizz, with it foaming up quite a lot when it hits the tongue. There’s some toffee in the aftertaste but the finish is relatively short. I can’t understand why they’ve produce this sub-standard hefe when their regular wheat ale is much better.

A decent Victorian hefe, but not quite good enough to justify the premium packaging and pricing. Looked great - cloudy amber with terrific head retention. Smelled like banana milkshake cordial - very sweet and strong. Also some dusty hops and pepper. The palate is where it all felt wrong to me - there’s a huge mouth-filling Cremola Foam fizz at first that fades to a hard spritzy finish. Very gassy and a bit hard-going. Lots of mashed banana and chewy malts with a faint vinous note and some wheatsheaf. Perhaps some mily chocolate but it laced some oomph. This isn’t far off being good but that over-excited palate swamps the subtle flavours. (750ml bottle courtesy of Bridge)

An pleasent release, banana and phenyl nose with a very bready/orange zest flavour. At times though I wonder if Ratebeer needs a value rating. It is all very enjoyable, but at $14AUD per bottle, it twice as good as the regular beechworth wheat beer? Probably not. That said, quality is a bit better with more roundness and mouthfeel.

Sweet hop malt aroma. Cloudy red orange colour with great head and lacing. Smooth palate.

Packaging looks great although the seal seemed a bit flimsy. Murky amber brown body with a good size white head. Orange, figs and cloves mixed in the aroma. Zesty and effervescent in the taste, cloves at first then some yeast and a little lemon. Not a favourite of mine is wheats, I sometimes find them too tart, but I knocked this one off easy enough.

This stuff looks awesome. Tawny orange with a massive ice cream head like the authentic stuff. And anything in a champagne bottle gets bonus marks from me. Classy. Big-time wholemeal bread malt, chocolate, orange rind and cloves. Very very wholemeal like a less classy Scheider or something. Phenolics are a bit clumsy and sweaty, but the malt is really good, with an big, soft mouthfeel but the carbonation was a bit too low for it to be sufficiently refreshing. More interesting malt character than their other hefe, but not as classy. For some reason it became slightly hard going.

It would be a crime not to comment on the packaging of this beer. Bridge Road has raised the presentation stakes significantly in this country with the beautiful wine-like label and heavy duty 750ml bottle. This is benchmark packaging, not just in OZ but the globally as well. Anyway – the beer. Pours a massive billowing head but shows excellent retention. Vibrant cloudy orange. Nose of slightly rusty malts and a hint of fruitiness; good but not great. Fruity palate in the right proportions and sweet backs filling out the mouthfeel. The only problem is that its all bit subdued – I’d like to see more overt hefe character coming through. Early days (still) for these guys and the beer will get better.
