COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Seasonal - Winter. Also available filtered in bottle. Also sold as a charity beer under the name Battle Of Britain Beer.
A robust, full-flavoured, dark old ale with real depth of flavour and a long finish. A classic in the true tradition of old ales. Satisfyingly dark but not impenetrable, good body but not overpowering, with a long pleasing finish. Exceptional balance of premium malt and choice English hops, carrying the unmistakable Chiltern ‘stamp’.
The beer’s idiosyncratic name is taken from the area immediately surrounding the Brewery, known as the Three Hundreds of Aylesbury, not to be confused with the Chiltern Hundreds, which extend across the Chiltern Hills at the back of the Brewery.

[Gravity cask at Chiltern brewery shop] 4.9% ABV on cask. Chestnut-red with slight off-white head. SLight to moderate carbonation More like an ESB than an old ale - some bitterness, earthy, lots of fruit (apple and blackberries). Hints of plum sourness. Decent beer.

Cask. Copper colour, small off-white head. Aroma is sweet bready malts with some mild bitter wooden notes as well. Flavour is grassy hops, sweet malts and mild dry dark fruityness. A quite hoppy and bitter old ale.

Purchased bottle directly from the chiltern brewery in wendover. Pours a clear amber, with a tan head. light aroma of fruit and raisins. taste is all liquorice and fruit, with a long finish (cherry), some light bitterness (balance is very good). nice enough, but not particularly interesting.

UPDATED: JUN 22, 2011 Cask conditioned handpump Malt Shovel Northampton An amber coloured beer with a whitish head. The aroma is bready and nutty with fruity notes. This is pretty much replicated in the mouth where there are bitter notes also. A pretty tasty beer although not your typical Old Ale that’s for sure. Score 3.4

A burnished brown ale with a good long-lasting head and fuddy, sweet aroma. In the mouth it is rich and chocolaty with a syrupy fruitiness. Smooth and satisying.

Botle conditioned: Rich and malty throughout with plenty of burnished roasty notes in both the aroma and flavour. Chocolate and hints of hazelnut with black cherries make up the exciting character of the beer.

Cask at The Boot, Sarratt, Herts. Deep amber colour with small white head. Malty, fruity aroma. Sweet, malty, fruity, caramel taste. I didn’t think that this was an old ale, slightly similar to Fullers ESB.

[500ml bottle.] Reddish copper with a thick cream head that rapidly fades; stewed fruit aroma; fruity malt body with a peppery bitterness to finish. Pleasant enough, but probably better from the cask.

Cask at Oxford BF ’08. Bright amber with a small white head. Attractive sweet berry fruit aroma, later revealing grapefruit and caramel. Sweetness, sourness and some grass in the taste. A faint bitterness at the close. This was my beer of the festival, largely because off that wonderful, complex aroma

Bottled. This copper coloured ale is the house beer at the Evesham Hotel. Its aroma is sweet and malty, with a very enjoyable full flavour which is mainly malty but nicely bitter on the finish. This may be a rebadge of 300s Old Ale.

Bottle. Golden brown with a small head. Aromas are malty with caramel and a light roast character. Flavours are weetabix malts with sweet light roast notes and chocolate. Earthy hops with a prickly bitterness.
