Carbonation levels are usually low and head seldom lasts beyond half way. Distinctive combination of flavours. Personally, I like it. Not everyone does.

Cask at the White Horse 40 from 40 Festival, 2nd May 2010. Classic copper bitter colour with a lacy white head. Very strong butter toffee nose and initial taste but not the slickness of diacetyl. Definitely nutty with a hint of fruitiness. Not bad and rather different from other ales. I think that if this was local beer it would definitely be seen as an acquired taste.

Cask conditioned at Far from the Madding Crowd, Oxford. Dark amber with white head. Initially sweet malty with a nutty, fruity tone, then there is a noticeable leafy hop to add a good balance of flavour. Good flavoursome bitter.

Cask conditioned handpump Malt Shovel Northampton A mid brown coloured beer with a whitish head. The aroma is thin with just a hint of dry fruitiness. The taste has good fruit with nice licorice notes and berries. There is a hint of acidity which is strange but reasonably appealing. It also has vinuous notes. Tasty and with odd characteristics for a beer of its strength.
