14th Dec 2012: the day before the annual Christmas Beer Festival in Essen. The Oud Arsenaal in Antwerp is where a few regular fest goers have a pre-fest meet-up: this is where my wife and I shared a 0.75 bottle of this fine beer with each other. Mini-haze to our golden/pale amber bodied beer, the head a full foaming covering of white bubbles. The nose was a true mixed bag of goodies: yeast, fresh fruit, candid fruit and spices. The taste was also an eclectic blend of flavours: too many to list, but full of interesting notes to find and enjoy. OK, I’ll list a few things I found: earthy yeast, pepper, biscuity malts, citrus hints, wood and nuts. Loved the whole thing.

Aroma is floral, fruity and phenolic. The floral note is similar to lavender and the phenolics are mostly coriander; these are the two dominant aromas. There are hints of pear, red apple cider, banana, citrus and cloves as well. A light sweet graininess is also present. Pours a fairly cloudy pale gold with a big pillowy white head. Lacing is fairly high and the head has very good retention. The beer has medium sized legs. The flavor starts sweet with a bit of honey and grain. Mid palate is an ester bomb with lots of banana and overripe pear. There is also a light dried fruit note similar to golden raisins or apricots. There is a moderately low bitterness to help balance the sweetness. The alcohol is fairly prevalent in the finish. The phenolics are lighter but there are some coriander and clove notes. The finish has a lingering sweetness with honey and a bit of a bitter note to balance it. As it warms the floral character becomes more noticeable. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied and the carbonation is high. Astringency is medium low and fairly noticeable and the alcohol warmth is medium high. The beer also seems to have a bit of a carbonic bite to it. Overall I do not think this beer is that great. There is an off astringency and the bitterness does not interact cleanly. There is also not enough malt character to balance all the esters, but I fond myself particularly sensitive to esters. The aroma is definitely more welcoming than the flavor.

Huge thanks to Erzengel for that one! Bottle looks really good, beer in the glass fine golden, huge head. Starts strong, fine malty and fruity with notes of apricot. Sourish-bitter background. Dry aftertaste, warming-malty. Really nice!

75cl bottle thanks to Allmyvinyl. Pours golden with steady carbonation and a generous lacy head. The nose has orange blossom and honey with just a hint of something gently spicy. The taste has orange creamola foam some honey again and something blossomy again. The palate is rich in structure and has a lovely texture with a lovely elegant finish.

A good strong belgian ale. It has a strong medicinal taste, coming from the added herbes. It gives the beer a special taste, that you like of dislike. It is a nice carbonated beer with a hoppy/herby aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Hazy yellow color with huge head. Aroma is yeasty like with most blonde Belgians, but also fruity and spicy. Lots of carbonation and a little bit more alcohol in the taste than in Chimay Triple.
