COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned - 150 cl, 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles. Named Grande Réserve in 75 cl bottles, and Magnum Grande Réserve in 150 cl bottles.
Chimay Blue is principally distinguished by its character of a strong beer. This is a beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavour, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma , while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

Pours a nice rich brown from a bottle, thick off-white head with large bubbles. Dark candi sugar, bit of an alcohol burn. Good beer.

The beer is hazy and dark brown in color. The foam is beige and will firmly. The foam has small to medium bubbles that hang around for a while. The foam leave direct track in the glass. Scents of some malt and dried fruit. Some floral and candied sugar with rum raisins. A little bitter orange and yeast with a little fruit cake. Very round in the aroma with a nice sweetness. The flavors are as scents. But with a little cocoa and a little caramel. There was a little lees. Is a real good balance in it all. Rich body. Moderate Carbonic. A little sweetness and a little small dry. Good roundness sitting on the palate just long.

330 mL bottle shared by ebone1988. The pour is a darker brown color with a thick khaki colored head and a bit of lace. The aroma is interesting. There is a nice dark fruit and caramel. I like the sweetness from the dark fruit, but it’s just rather light and non-complex. The flavor is similar. There is a caramel and a dark fruit presence, but it’s light and crisp. The mouth feel is light and crisp with a caramel sweetness that falls off pretty quick. There is a bright soft carbonation, which is weird, and the aftertaste is quick fading and malty. Interesting for sure.

Bottle shared with koleminer20. For the book. Aroma is dark fruit, dry, yeast, really nice. Appearance is brown, hazy, light tan head. Taste is dry, some dark fruit, it’s sadly pretty bland by comparison to other Belgian Strongs. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, dark fruit and candy aftertaste. Overall, good and drinkable but not what I expected.

330ml bottle from Tesco. Brownish color with an off white head. A pleasant but muted aroma from this beer. Some banana and malt. The taste is full though with medium sweetness and light bitterness. Oily mouthfeel. Not sour at all but maybe some unami. Nice strong beer

Aroma: it doesn’t show a lot of aroma. Alcohol is almost indiscernible (a great achievement for a beer with this quantity of alcohol). Hints of yeast, caramel, roasted malts, spicy. No hints of hop aroma. Appearance: dark brown color, hazy, almost totally opaque. Average head despite its 9% ABV alcohol level. Beige head slightly creamy. Low retention. Taste: medium to heavy sweetness, light bitterness, no sourness. Palate: medium body, soft carbonation, oiliy texture, not quite long sweet and finish. Overall: a good beer. The high alcohol level is almost indiscernible in flavors and aroma. You know it’s there because of its warming effect. Great sweet, caramel and roasted malt flavors, a little spicy. Low bitterness. Don’t drink it too cold or you’ll lose a lot of the complex aromas and flavors. 10-12 Celsius degrees is the right service temperature.

Dark brown colour with some reddish hints. Average head, slightly off-white, dense and stable, low lacing. Aroma shows caramel and sugar with some dark/dried fruits notes in the background. Taste has a lot of sweetness with caramel and an almost aggressive sugary feel that feels kinda artificial. Pity cause the beer shows some very nice liquorice and dark/dried fruit notes on the background. Some earthiness and a slight hint of acidity are also noticeable. Finish is also a bit too much on the sweet/sugary side. Medium body, a bit more crisp than usual per style, but overall still decently creamy. Warming enough. Decent, but far from quality strong dark ales

Small sample at Mitsui Food Show, Yokohama. Pours brown, bit of foam, relatively clear. Aroma has some alcohol bite, also sweeter dried fruits. Taste has the same, dried fruits, prunes and lots of caramel. Sweetish and quite tasty, suitable for drinking from Chimay’s chalice. Makes me think that I should maybe give trappists a few more chances.
