Bottle conditioned - 150 cl, 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles. Named Grande Réserve in 75 cl bottles, and Magnum Grande Réserve in 150 cl bottles.
Chimay Blue is principally distinguished by its character of a strong beer. This is a beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavour, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma , while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

Belgian yeast, plum, other dark fruits in the nose. Looks beautiful, hazy brown with thick brownish, long-lasting head. Taste starts off with a a subtle sweetness, middle is slightly sour and finish gives you a long-lasting belgian yeast and caramel aftertaste. Medium bodied, heavy carbonation. Not clolyingly sweet and alcohol is well masked. Not the most complex belgium strong ale I’ve had, but it’s lack of cloying sweetness and it’s subtle balance make this a good one.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours brown with a tan head. Taste caramel, dark fruit, Belgian yeast. I thought this was pretty good. I would definitely drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark malty beer with chocolate and Carmel flavor. Leaves great taste, but heavy in nature.

Chimay 2013 - Ambrée marron-orangée très foncée. Grosse mousse yvoire assez persistante.

Comparison between 2014 and 2006 bottles from Systembolaget (numeric rating based on current 2014 beer). Pours dirty dark brown in the glass - the 2014 with a beige head that stays throughout the session - the 2006 totally without head. Appearance: 5/3. Aroma of 2014 is very discrete, some roasted notes, that’s all. The 2006 has a more powerful aroma, mainly of yeast - not too attractive. Aroma: 5/5. The taste of the 2014 is fresh, full of roasted notes, some spices like licorice, and a little bitterness in the aftertaste. The 2006 has obviously lost its’ freshness but the licorice and fennel spices are there, also the yeast comes through, but hardly any bitterness. Taste: 7/4. On the palate the 2014 wins easily, being fresh and lively. The 2006 is smooth but dull. Palate: 5/2. Overall: 14/9. The 2006 is sold as a special case at Systembolaget, probably some boxes that were misplaced and found 8 years later and now sold at premium price: 5.2 euros a bottle. It’s a beer well over its’ prime and not worth the price. The normal fresh Chimay displayes the qualities that made this the most popular trappist beer in the world, with it’s herbal fruity freshness. But there’s a timelimit in this beer and 8 years is beyond that limit.
