COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned - 150 cl, 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles. Named Grande Réserve in 75 cl bottles, and Magnum Grande Réserve in 150 cl bottles.
Chimay Blue is principally distinguished by its character of a strong beer. This is a beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavour, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma , while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

First smell is apples, baking spices and alcohol. Initial flavors are spices which level out to alcohol and roasted malts. Very light body. Very good beer, but probably not the best of it’s genre. Worth picking up though.

Comparison between 2014 and 2006 bottles from Systembolaget (numeric rating based on current 2014 beer). Pours dirty dark brown in the glass - the 2014 with a beige head that stays throughout the session - the 2006 totally without head. Appearance: 5/3. Aroma of 2014 is very discrete, some roasted notes, that’s all. The 2006 has a more powerful aroma, mainly of yeast - not too attractive. Aroma: 5/5. The taste of the 2014 is fresh, full of roasted notes, some spices like licorice, and a little bitterness in the aftertaste. The 2006 has obviously lost its’ freshness but the licorice and fennel spices are there, also the yeast comes through, but hardly any bitterness. Taste: 7/4. On the palate the 2014 wins easily, being fresh and lively. The 2006 is smooth but dull. Palate: 5/2. Overall: 14/9. The 2006 is sold as a special case at Systembolaget, probably some boxes that were misplaced and found 8 years later and now sold at premium price: 5.2 euros a bottle. It’s a beer well over its’ prime and not worth the price. The normal fresh Chimay displayes the qualities that made this the most popular trappist beer in the world, with it’s herbal fruity freshness. But there’s a timelimit in this beer and 8 years is beyond that limit.

Pours a murky brown-amber color with a quickly attenuating khaki head. Bubble gum, mincemeat, spicy nose. Pretty lively mouthfeel. Brown sugar, earthy notes, spicy Belgiany flavors. Poor for the price.

Hardly no head. Smell is lots of apricot and some banana. Nice smell! Taste is complex! Nice and quite much! Apricot is still in there, some banana as well. Hint of coffee and some crackers. Not very much carbon in. This was a 2006. Nice beer!

beautiful coffee cream head, and quite a lot of it, reddish (maybe a bit towards orange) colour, clear (if you dont mix the yeast from the bottle to the glass), fullbodied nicely caramel and a slight taste of roasted malts, a great trappist beer

Aroma licoroso e maltado. Álcool bem evidente e agradável, bom corpo e alta carbonatação. Evidente malte torrado, com notas decidiras maduras (principalmente ameixa) e caramelo. Dulçor sem exagero. Não se percebe lúpulo. Retrogosto leve, persistente é agradável. Bela cerveja.

Pours brown with a grey head that disappears quickly. Taste is malty caramel, with a slightly alcoholic aftertaste. Good one to drink slowly, but not my fav abbey.

Bottle 33cl. Deep brown with a light brown top that fades quickly to a thin one. Aromas of sugar, caramel. Taste is sweet, little dry, with hints of bitterness and alcohol.
