Chimay Blue is principally distinguished by its character of a strong beer. This is a beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavour, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma , while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

Now I have to say right up front that I am extemely biased when I say that thi sis my favorite beer ever ( so far). My 10th Class Reunin was this past wekend and after a long evening of dancing and drinking we ended up at a friends house for, what else, more drinking. Guests were handed bottles of Sam Addams and Pete's somethin'-or-other and then this wonderful man who I hadn't sen in 7 years brings out a bottle of Chimay!!!!!! Glorio day! Of course noone else in the place could appreciate the earthy and subtle complexities of JUST the aroma of this beer. "Hey, man. That's Skunked!" Fools. DE-licious. Dark and sweet, earthy and fruity. A fine balance between the hops and malt. Truly a fine end to a wonderful night. I would reccomend this over champagne at almost any occasion, if you have the kind of friends that will appreciate it.

Een typische Belgische trappist. Een donkere kleur en een goede neus. Ook een goede schuimkraag.

Maker: Chimay, Baileux, Belgium *** Beer: Chimay Trappist Grande Réserve Limited Edition 2014 (bottled, unfiltered, 750ml) *** Style: Belgian Strong Ale *** ALC.VOL.: 9.0% *** This is not the regular "Grande Reserve" Blue or Red beer from Chimay, but a special limited edition for 2014 (Best before: 2019!) *** Colour: Hazy dark copper, with a medium-sized, creamy light beige head. *** Nose: Preserved plums, cane sugar, a whiff of orange peel, toffee. *** Texture: Medium body, still a bit watery(!). Medium carbonation. *** Taste: Prunes, cane sugar, yeast, mild spices (licorice) and oranges at the start, but not cloyingly sweet. More licorice to come towards the middle, but with a hint of lemon and yeast to liven things up. Finish, too, has licorice, and toffee, cane sugar. Very mild, yeasty aftertaste. *** Impressions: Medium-heavy Belgian strong ale with a nice mix of flavours, but not too much body considering he 9% ABV. Will stick with you after a while - before it REALLY sticks with you.

A stepping stone into the great, Belgian trappist brewing world, esters and complexity.

aroma: banana, raisin, vanilla, alcohol, creamy, caramel, roasty. appearance: dark brown, hazy, brown foam, head forms relatively quickly, good retention. flavor: strong alcohol taste, raisins, caramel, slight fruity taste, slight astringency, long finish, no bitterness from hops. light sweetness. palate:medium body, slick feel, lively, slightly astringent. overall: a good beer, although alcoholic taste is a little too far forward. greatly enjoyed the raisins and banana which were not overbearing. much better than the brun version

Dark with a hint of red. Big off white head. Aroma is huge with raisins, toffee and bread. Taste is a bit underwhelming compared to the powerful aroma. Sweet with medium bitterness. High carbonation

Bottle. This is a classic of my teenage times. Pours in hazy brown body with medium white head. Aroma has caramel profile, light yeasty, floral, nutty, light coffee. Taste has high caramel sweetness with light earthy bitterness. Light bready. Body is full, high carbonation.

0.33l bottle. Very hazy dark orange body, thin off-white head. Aroma of banana, caramel, cloves and peach. Taste of chocolate, banana, peach, floral hops and some booze. Sweet, but not cloying. Awesome beer.
