bottle; brown hazy with medium tan head; aroma-yeast, fruits and floral... something spicy/pepper; taste-mild sweetness, moderate carbonation and bitter reminiscent of some barleywine. Hard to say if I prefer Red or Blue...Red for aroma

One of the first beers I had when I started getting curious about craft beer. I enjoy the balance of this beer as well as the finish.

Don’t know how it’s rated a 100 but still good as he’ll. Has a great bubbly

Bottle poured into a weizen glass. Rich, viscous sensual pour. The head is creamy with abundant lacing, mocha colour. The aroma is sweet, like brown sugar. The body opaque, dark brown, with some particulate matter. potent robust flavour that is chocolaty.. Long finish that is rich and bitter. This Belgian libation has a kick, didn’t have to have any dinner after one of these. There is almost something medieval about this beer. There were suggestions of Liquorice or anise, in addition to lusty undertones of iron, earth and bark I’m sure satyrs and centaurs drank this stuff

really smooth enjoyable trappist ale. the abv doesnt even come into it at all, so smooth. very easy to drink, most of the flavors are very understated except the brown sugar, but not too sweet, very well balanced, very enjoyable.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 gramity (520) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAR 21, 2011
Cloudy mahogany-brown, with a strong finger or two of densely woven, Belgian tan head.
Malts, especially dark fruity ones- plums, currants, dried berries- stand out here. Not extremely yeasty but just enough to provide a light tang to the aroma. A light spiciness- cloves, very light black pepper- is also here.
Quite sweet, much like the aroma; I detect a lot of the same dark fruits, alongside brown and candy sugar flavors. Hints of chocolate, bread, and the aforementioned (still minor) yeast make this one complex and enjoyable. With warmth, the dark fruits take on a grapy/raisiny/winy flavor.
Medium/full-bodied with moderate carbonation (a little less than I expected from a Belgian). Somewhat smooth, with a light warming effect from the alcohol.
Not hard to have multiple glasses of this; this may not have been my favorite Belgian strong dark ale, but a good, enjoyable beer nonetheless

On the nose I got sweet malts, ripe fruits, raisin, caramel and some yeastyness. Taste is caramel, ripe fruits, dried fruits and some sweet malts.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2011 bottle@home: medium body, plenty carbonation, spice, dominant malt, medium sweet, minor raisins, slight bitterness, minor champagne-like end //// 2005 Vintage 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Kulminator: much rounder & mellower taste, all the flavours have blended & unified by now, soft dark fruits & brown sugar with the spices now being distributed much better, beginning to develop “vintage” flavours //// 1998 Vintage 33 cl. bottle sampled @ Kulminator: over the hill really, slightly oxidised, the taste has been hollowed out, strong vintage flavours, slightly dusty & strongly damply cellar-like, people go crazy for things like this but it is has been aged far too long for my tastes, definitely over the hill
