No date. Into Chimay glass. Rich brown with some red hue with a light tan head that starts big but fades fast to an 8th of an inch and holds - no lace. Aroma is pretty solid and very typical of the style - sweet candy, vanilla, dough, dark fruity (like plums), some booze and licorice, and yeast. The flavor is the same but a bit less yeasty and just a bit better in general. Not overly sweet like many Belgians, but still sweet. Chimay hides the alcohol pretty well in this one, though it does heat the stomach pretty noticeably. Medium to light bodied with over-the-top carbonation like most other Belgians, all of which I am not a huge fan of. Overall: a solid brew, but wouldnt want more than one (or even more than about 8 ounces). A generally over-hyped overrated style IMO -- I just don’t get much complexity or sense much drinkability from it, and a good style has to have one or the other. yumyum (113), barrie, Ontario, Canada Jan 4, 2009 one of my favourites, the bottle I have was from 2006 (not sure on ideal length to age it, anyone?) Regardles is a great beer, nice light fruity aroma. MAlts give a nice sweetness(but not overly so) to go along with caramel and slight spiciness.Carbonation is low (almost like a cask) Very easy dirinking and very tasty FatguyRacer (128), Crownsville, Maryland, USA Jan 4, 2009 Updated: Jan 30, 2009Bottle. Pours a dark brown with dark tan head. Aroma of yeast, alcohol, spice and malts. Light and fizzy on the palate with a heavy malt taste with a nice bite. I have to agree with others who are reminded of barley wine, although it’s not quite as heavy. A good brew none the less. weezfour (122), Oradell, New Jersey, USA Jan 3, 2009 You guys know what this is about. Knocks your socks off. Had this as my 100th beer at Clancy’s in Bloomsburg, PA. ericandersnavy (1038), crossroads, Texas, USA Jan 3, 2009 bottle from fox and the hound in lewisville, tx served in a pint glass. poured dark brown with a thick beige head. aroma of caramel and spice. a good smooth flavor of caramel, spice, dark fruits, and alcohol. this was my first chimay and i have no idea why i have waited so long to try it. an excellent belgian strong. brewski519 (393), Morrisville, North Carolina, USA Jan 2, 2009 Pours a dark brown with a nice tan head. Smell of spice, dark fruit, sugar and alchohol. Very good beer but every sip I took I could not get past the fact that this bottle tasted like a barleywine to me.... 48ratrod (5), langley, British Columbia, Canada does not count Dec 31, 2008 Definitely a pleasant experience, not what one would expect from such a tiny, understated bottle. Doesn’t taste like any 9% beer. NIce aroma, great muddy brown appearance and the flavour is a fine and sweet.
