Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 18A). Bottle 33 cl - Batch L13-556. AROMA: aroma with significant esters reminiscent of oranges and pears, mixed with peppery and spicy notes. low floral hop aromas. APPEARANCE: pale yellow color and hazy. large moussy head with average retention. TASTE: a blend of fruity flavors (oranges and pears) with spicy (coriander) and peppery notes. low bitterness with a semi-dry finish. PALATE: light body with average carbonation. Bottle at Cafe de la Gare. Hazy golden pour, thin white head. Aroma is quite spicy, slightly soapy, yeasty and a bit peppery. Flavor is a bit malty sweet, slightly spicy and with a decent body. Less refined than expected.

Shocked to find this on draft in the States! Hazy yellow gold pour with soft white foam. Gentle floral notes. Lemon zest. Thyme. Dry finish. Great stuff.

Draft at Monks. Pours a bright hazy golden body with thick white lacing. Aroma is faint grass, spice and sweet candy. Mouthfeel is light and soft with notes of spicy grass, sweet candy and light clean malt. Almost a hybrid of a session Belgian ale and a Pilsner with a clean malt profile. I really like how the typical Belgian notes are muted overall.

11.2oz bottle, from Dutch’s. Labeled Cimay Doree ("ale brewed with spices"). Code on back reads L14-435. Poured into a Chimay Goblet (the finest moment this glass has ever had). Darker kind of yellow golden color, with some yeast bits in there. Completely opaque. Thin off-white head, with good retention, leaving good lace. Very soft, moderate to stronger carbonation up front.. But like many belgian ales, the carbonation and texture mellows out very nicely once you let it sit for 10 minutes or so, and becomes very manageable and delightful. Kind of a full, medium body. Big orange and spice aroma, kind of like a belgian witbier, but with more a full, soft body and more dry finish. More dry texture for sure. Moderate sweet taste, very light bitter, kind of spicy. Belgian yeast, some orange citrus, and spice is what dominates this brew but it’s all very nice and with a classic belgian trappist texture. Not ground breaking but well-done for what it is. A nice one to complement my sandwich with.

Kauge (369) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - OCT 25, 2014
Bottle from a Selver in Tallinn (€ 2,89). Pours hazy and a murky coppery with a biiig white top that almost refuses to drop while lacing nicely. Nose is just fabulous with sugary-caramelly and lemony sweetness and some delicate spicy notes. I’m really liking this. Could be a bit stronger though. Taste is less sweet but sure as hell malty, though some sugar, caramel and citrus detectable, also faint notes of spiciness, and a fair deal of grainy wheat. Body maybe a notch less than medium. Very active carbonation, at first at least, softens noticeably quite fast. Bitterness minimal. Palate dry (grainy, wheaty). Started out enjoying it tremendously, but then it kind of dulled after a short while. Should’ve consumed it quicker, would’ve enjoyed it more. Not bad though.

11.2 oz bottle now available locally. Pours a hazy golden with a hint of orange and a small white head. The aroma and flavor have soft citrus, yeasty bready malts, a hint of floral on the nose, light body, soft mouth feel, this is clean like the other beers, just not very much to work with.
