COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned - 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles.
Ingredients: Pilsner malt (French barley from Champagne); wheat starch or flour (10% - 15%); dextrose (5%); malt extract (0.1%); hop extract from German Hallertaur (aroma) & American Galena (bittering) hops. Yeast & liquid invert sugar added to the bottled beer.
Chimay Red is noted for its coppery colour which makes it particularly attractive. Topped with a creamy head, it gives off a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation. The taste perceived in the mouth is a balance confirming the fruity nuances noticed in the fragrance. Its taste, which imparts a silky sensation to the tongue, is made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness. To the palate, the taster perceives a pleasant astringency which complements the flavour qualities of this beer very harmoniously. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

Cloudy murky reddish brown (lots of floaties), nice creamy off white head settles and lasts. Fruity, caramel malty, Belgian yeasty aroma. Not too cloying Belgian yeasty taste, caramel and toffee malts, sweet dark fruit, lightly spiced. Lively carbonation, medium body, lightly hopped. Mild bitter alcohol finish. Lovely. I feel like the Chimay Red is the step child of the Chimay family. Not nearly as popular as the Blue or even the White. It often gets neglected. It’s so easy to find the Chimay beers, we often take them for granted. The red is such a solid beer. Perhaps the best Abbey Dubbel that I have ever had. Notes of dates, roasted almonds, pecans, and general nuttiness. Easy to drink. Smooth. Alcohol flavor is non existant. Great beer.

Not as rich as the blue but a diverse taste that flows down well and leaves a nice subtle fruit aftertaste.

From BA: October 2007: This review is of a bottle bought in September 2007 and best before 2011, it is being drunk on my ’Night of the Chimay’ as I have all three beers and some cheese from the Abbey all purchased in Middelkerke on the Belgian coast during a resent visit. Was it the cheese? Or was it the other Chimay beers lined up next to it, this beer was a lot better than the first review in all aspects. It seemed richer and fuller, it looked happier too. Its aroma was wholesum and more fruity, the flavours stood out more and the overall enjoyment was a whole lot greater. I am now really looking forward to trying the beer i have set aside for later
