COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned - 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles.
Ingredients: Pilsner malt (French barley from Champagne); wheat starch or flour (10% - 15%); dextrose (5%); malt extract (0.1%); hop extract from German Hallertaur (aroma) & American Galena (bittering) hops. Yeast & liquid invert sugar added to the bottled beer.
Chimay Red is noted for its coppery colour which makes it particularly attractive. Topped with a creamy head, it gives off a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation. The taste perceived in the mouth is a balance confirming the fruity nuances noticed in the fragrance. Its taste, which imparts a silky sensation to the tongue, is made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness. To the palate, the taster perceives a pleasant astringency which complements the flavour qualities of this beer very harmoniously. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

I wasn’t incredible impressed with this beer the first time or two I had it. This last time, however was a little different. I had a bottle that I had been aging for about three years. I took it to a beer release with a buddy of mine. Wow, what a difference three years made. It was incredibly smooth and had some real depth of flavor. I think I will pick up a couple more of these to age. I love the Chimay Blue fresh...but after tasting this aged...might have to try aging the Blue also.

I tried it at a local beer fest. It reminded me of a Hefe Wiezen in color, body and taste. It was OK but considering the price I prefer a less expensive German beer that has a similar if not better taste. I’d drink it again but its a little too expensive to drink often. I think its actually somewhat over rated.

Purchased from Malt Shoppe. Deep red/amber color, light brown, creamy head. Light aroma. Smooth beer - slightly bitter at the end. Pricier - would buy again but not often.

Bra huvu! Brunröd färg. Söt, maltig doft & torkade frukter. Smaken är fascinerande. Kandisocker i smak så söt & fin. Karamell ton, toffe, & torkad frukt. Mums! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In Brussels for business I tried two beers a night. Little to add to what others have said, this was a knockout and likely better by not having been shipped transatlantic. Not quite the lingering maltiness of the Chimay blu, which I prefer, but a proud, world class brew.

Oh Chimay, you feisty little red head, you packs a punch. Take your aspirin before bed because this little ginger will knock you out.

Pour is amber with a two-finger off-white cap. Nose is apricots, prunes, bread, spice and alcohol. Taste is far less sweet than I expected, in fact it’s downright dry, with a lightly bitter finish with lingering spice and alcohol warmth. Nice, but I think I prefer the blue.
