5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
My very first beer from Belgium when Liquor Barn was in Dublin, CA. This was 1983!! I have been a devotee of Trappist ales and Belgian beers ever since.

Flott rødbrun farge med et hvit skum, skummet la seg som en ring. Aroma av malt, kandisukker, karamell, moden frukt og gjær. Smaken følger aroma på en flott måte. Ettersmaken varte en god stund.

Bottle in Spain
Very bubbly with golden color. Aroma and taste are very Belgian, very double brown Trappist. Quite soft in palate however. A good one I an say!

Draft at Uber. Copper pour, dense creamy eggshell head, great retention and lacing. While I patiently wait for the head to drop off, I get to take a long time with the aroma. Very fruity, almost like tart apples and peach. Cherries, some candi. Taste: bread, caramel, fruit. Rather sweet, bready and slightly toasty. Cardboard. Palate: medium body that feels thin and watery, but I’ve been imperial stouting it up so will give it the benefit of the doubt. Overall: I’m guessing this is one you have to be in the mood for, or you drink again and again and acclimate to it, grow to love it. I could see that in this one. Not sure I’m likely to get to that point, but it’s nice enough.

The wife of Freaky Tiki is a keeper. And this review will tell you why: my fav funk-soul-deep-blues St Louis radio station KDHX (check it out online) had an ad for a Belgium beer & mussels festival that had me jealous. Well lo & behold wouldn’t you know she got a mini-festival going at home (having a 3 week old keeps you off the road) & this often drank but never rated brew was the beer we started with. Pours the colour of my retro modern couch: deep mahogany with a thin cap lounging on top. First thing I notice is a brisk carbonation. Flavour is candied plums, steady spicing & a slightly bitter finish. I like it but I don’t like it as much as the 2nd bottle of the night that’s waiting in the fridge: St Bernardus.

750ml ($15.99) very good beer. taste is lighter than the blue grand reserve. Has good carbonation and flavor is very complex. Worth having if only once. but personally I’ve had better and at a better price.

330 ml bottle. Ruby red, slightly hazy, with a huge, frothy and bubbly head, which disappeared very quickly. Strong and pungent nose, slightly perfumy, with notes of brown sugar, toffee/burnt caramel, sligtly toasted, some blood orange presence, a hint of booze. Fruity and slightly bitter in the mouth, plenty of dark berries taste, light dark fruits and sour black cherries, leaving a mild acidic edge in the background. Average to lively carbonation, medium body, slightly oily texture. Not my favourite style of beer, but definitely a nice sipper.

Absolutely love this abbey beer! The pour was a cloudy and deep burgundy with amber highlights. The head was thick and creamy white and the pleasing sweet malt character wi fruity notes of apricot and plums delights the tongue. It has smooth carbonation, medium body, is very tasty with a slight bitterness at the back. Very drinkable and not too complex. Suits my tastes perfectly!
