EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA May 27, 2009 Young bottle. Sweetly malty nose with a little roast, light mineral water and candi sugar yeasty notes. Dark ruby-mahogany pour does not let light through. Sudsy off-white head. Taste is sugary, yeasty, and richly malty, though a little one-dimensional; ends up drying off quite a bit, faint light fruit and air. Medium body, lightly bitter. For its relative blandness, this is still very balanced and composed, and the flavors have had some time to mature and mesh together. MagnumPI (56), Essex, England May 24, 2009 I HAD MERCY !
Looks rich and complex, but actually an easy to drink popular dark supermarket beer but is eminently pleasant. The sort of beer you can drink and hardly notice which isnt everything I want, although it looks the part with its chestnut hues. Certainly not Chimays finest
ZR2Blazer (46), Roanoke, Virginia, USA May 24, 2009 This is the first Trappist and the first Belgium beer I’ve ever had. Pour was nice, tons of head. I had to wait 3-4 minutes before I could complete the pour, and drink. Color is dark copper, and I picked up wood and cherry hints. There was so much hype on this beer, on the first 2 to 3 drinks I liked it, but I was not overly impressed. By the time I was half way done, this had become one of my favorite beers of all time. This is the absolute smoothest beer I have ever had. I enjoy hops, I enjoy the sharpess, the bite, the citrus, everything about a good hoppy brew. But this... This is is just so smooth. There is no bite, an extremely drinkable beer. I had someone who can’t stand beer try it, and they liked it. This beer appeals to the masses, I look forward to trying more Trappists beers. WVHouseofBeer (339), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA May 22, 2009 I really was expecting more from this, especially after how good the White was. It wasnt bad, but it lacked a little bit in the flavor and aroma department. ajm (903), Los Angeles, California, USA May 18, 2009 Bottle from Papago. Pours with dissipating ring. Nose introduces a strange Quebecois yeast quality. Flavor is dark fruit, brown sugar, tannin, and more of the yeastiness. Even finish - trails off in the effervescent Trappist way. daniele (1642), Italy May 17, 2009 ambrata buona schiuma persistente note leggeremnte tostate un po di malto leggero spezie luppoli in bocca ritornano le note leggeremnte tostate un po di lievitùi un tocco di tostato medio amaro mickmac (67), Ngunnawal, Australia May 16, 2009 From the bottle it pours with huge frothy off white white that quickly diminishes to just a sparse lacing on the surface of the beer. Orange-red colour with some suspended yeast haze. A toasted bread-toffee aroma with some earthy-sweaty notes. Toffeeish taste with some clovey-dried spicesand an alcoholic warmth and a balanced malt sweetness-hop bitterness in the aftertaste.
NJJereme (261), Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA May 16, 2009 Bottle. Pours an opaque brownish-tawny color w/ a nice off-white head that sticks around. Aroma is not overpowering on pour. Autumn spices and fruitiness hit the back of the tongue causing it to tingle as it goes down. Medium bodied. A pretty nice brew.
