wimpie133 (130), Brugge, Belgium Oct 18, 2009 Bottle, 33 cl., tasted blind. A red beer with a medium unstable dirty white head. It smells like some dried fruits, some caramel notes also, light malts noticeable, also light sweet. The taste goes similar to the La Trappe Quadruppel, with the difference you taste this is a beer with a lower alcohol percentage. But anyway: a nice (dark) fruity taste, some caramel notes, light sweet, some spices included. Not really an aftertaste, but for this beer it doens’t matter, as it is a good beer anyway. Lyncham (48), Ohio, USA Oct 15, 2009 When it comes to Begium Ales, I am a Strong Ale fan. This beer has a great copper color, nice head, and a better aroma than flavor. The aroma is sweet and the ligher malt/spiced flavor is not as complex or full as Reds bigger brother Blue. gracefullypunk (272), Washington, USA Oct 13, 2009 An unexpected surprise at The Wyndham’s wine and cheese party. Pours mahogany with a thick beige head. Aromas of brown sugar, citrus, caramel, and some red fruits. Tastes a bit yeasty, peppery, lots of red fruits. A perfect balance. Kuzo (32), Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 13, 2009 Poured from a bottle conditioned since 2004. Pours a dark, cloudy, opaque copper with a soapy off-white head. Not much on the nose. I was expecting a lot more. Some fruityness and hints of raisin. The taste is very balanced and very drinkable. Hint of blueberry? and banana, some malt and yeast. The alcohol is masked beautifully. Mouth feel is very carbonated and light. Perhaps it was the conditioning, but this is not the Chimay Red I remember. That is not a negative comment. Its just different than the other Chimay Reds i’ve drank. If I didn’t know it was 7%, i could easily mistake this for a great tasting session beer. caresville (106), Vernon, New Jersey, USA Oct 12, 2009 starter kit for chimay, great belgian dubbel. smells of dried fruits, brown sugar and malts. sweet and malty with hints of dry fruit (raisins and prunes) also some caramel, kinda yeasty too. good stuff, but as most know and agree... the blue and white are better. brosen561 (19), Minnesota, USA Oct 12, 2009 In its glass, while dining out. Dark ruby beer with a finger width off-white head. Sweet malty, caramel apple aroma. Sweet taste of tropical fruit (pears and figs), and just enough bitterness to balance it. Very nice. Niko100 (82), New York, USA Oct 10, 2009 Very dark cider color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of malt, some fruit & spice; Flavor mainly of sweet roasted malt, caramel & cinnamon; Very balanced palate - quite good; My second favorite Chimay – with blue as first and white as third. VTHopHead (895), Barre, Vermont, USA Oct 10, 2009 Updated: Oct 11, 2009Taster at Great Lost Bear - Poured a nice coppery dark amber in color with a small off-white head. Aroma was strong of bready Belgian yeast, fruity esters (dark fruits) and slightly sweet malts. Flavor followed pretty closely, with some slight hop bitterness to balance things out. Good...
