3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 McGarnigle (443) - Rochester, New York, USA - JAN 11, 2010
Smaller bottle, poured into Chimay goblet. Pours mostly clear reddish-brown. The head fizzes away fairly quickly, leaving a bald spot of foam. Yeasty aroma. Somewhat light-bodied with prickly fizz, the flavor is yeasty, slightly spicy, and fruity...more berries than darker fruits. Plays out as the most summer-y of the Chimays, but that doesn’t mean it lacks depth.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 rmasa (324) - Vantaa, FINLAND - JAN 11, 2010
Dark brown to reddish color with longlasting, medium-sized head; aroma of sweet malt: caramel and brown sugar with red berries, red fruits and yeast; mouthfeel is very smooth with pleasant, smooth carbonation, medium bodied; flavor of sweet caramel and strawberry-like fruitness and yeast, and it is at the same time refreshing and warming, maybe a bit of like "berryjuice", but not in the bad sense. One could call this an "easy" trappist, which is pretty much is, but excellent whatsover.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 cking (1175) - North Canton, Ohio, USA - JAN 9, 2010
"Nice aroma of spicy red fruits, mild clove, yeast and cedar. Amber brown body with a lasting 1/2" foamy head and solid lacing. Lots of tight, high energy carbonation. Medium bodied, lightly sweet with a faint bitterness. Earthy yeast and dank fruit flavors followed by sweet bread, banana, anise and clove. Solid Belgian Ale, somewhat tame all around although it’s well put together."
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 judasbeer (431) - Budapest, HUNGARY - JAN 9, 2010
Appearance: Pours dark copper color with frothy, ariy, bubbleish, beige head, what is fading into a small ring.
Aroma: Moderate yeasty, spicy, phenolic dominance with dried figs, banana, molded cheese and some herbal hops.
Flavor: Moderate, yeasty-based, dried fruity esters, hints of banana and distinct molded cheesy notes. Some herbal hoppy presence at the medium and at the end. The malt profile is a weak point of the flavor. It’s way too moderate and subtle, not as rich as you would expect.
Palate: Medium body with light to medium yeast thickness. OK-carbonation.
Overall impression: A bit different kind of Abbey-brown ale what i prefer. Lacks of rich, darker-toasted malty components, but it least has some very unique yeasty and herbal profile.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 RC8 (303) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 6, 2010
Great Belgian beer. I like the flavour of malt and hops in this, which sometimes goes missing in Belgian beers to sugars and spices. Nicely done.
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 tzakiel (79) - Virginia, USA - JAN 4, 2010
Chimay Rouge is a very nice Belgian. I’m not experienced enough in Belgians to detect major differences between this and the other "colors" of Chimay, however it is a nice beer with the same fresh yeasty and fruity aroma I have come to love in Chimay beers.
4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Papillon (280) - Sudbury, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 3, 2010
330 mL Bottle with a "serve before end of 2013" date. Of all the beers I get to sample and report at RB, it is the unpasteurized "Bière Sur Lie" or Beer on Lees that fly high and get Brownie points in the Overall section. Here we just have another example. Murky copper body with a pale beige foamy head that settles to a clingy ring. Rich sweet aroma of malts, yeast, apricot, banana, there is something else there too: bubblegum and cherry candy. Wow! This beer is sweet in a way that it doesn’t assault the taste buds. It’s a mild fruity-sweet and not a harsh / sharp sugar-sweet. The taste is a complex combination of malts and fruits although I can make out bubblegum and Maraschino cherry in the aftertaste. Astringent but velvety fruity finish with a nice clean ending. Belgium, this has got to be one of your aces. Hey Bartender (brandishing my empty glass).
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jesperhammer (1294) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - JAN 2, 2010
31-DEC-2009, bottle.
I quite like the blue, so what can the red do?
Brown, off-white head.
Definately belgian. Brown sugar and sweet, very sweet, actually too sweet.
This is dissapointing. I was expecting much more from this. No rebuy.
