ultraspank (856), Dublin, Ohio, USA Nov 22, 2003 Enjoyed this while watching the 1st half of the OSU/Michigan game. Woot!!, what a great game. Anyway, this brew pours a hazy clover honey amber. The giant off white frothy head is mostly lasting with good lacing. The subtle nose is licorice, roses, alcohol, strawberry/banana/cherry, and pepper. The flavor is lighter than I expected for the gravity. Great balance with the alcohol remaining concealed and elusive - just the way I like it. Tangy middle and a long peppery finish. The medium dry and fizzy palate finishes chalky. This is definitely a beer that must be allowed to warm and breathe. P.S. enjoyed this with a Mama Mimi's "Take N Bake" pizza. For all those of you in central Ohio that haven't tried one - GET ON IT!!
Imperial-John (113), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Nov 30, 2008 Hazy golden orange with big white head that thins quickly. Sweet yeast aroma. Taste is alcohol, bittersweet dry bubbly yeast. Dry bitter after-taste. ZazuH (28), Brentwood, California, USA Nov 30, 2008 (1.5 pt bottle) Golden to slightly amber pour w/ off-white head. Sweet bread aroma w/ notes of candied pineapple. Lively carbonation. Caramel and bread w/ sweet, spicy earthiness (vermouth?) . Slight diacetyl. Clean mouthfeel. EricE (293), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Nov 29, 2008 Golden yellow color with lots of crap floating around (my fault for a poor pour). Fluffy white head. Sour lemony aroma with lots of funky yeast. Spicy and doughy. Bitter citrus fruit flavor with lots of dry yeast. Lots of carbonation. I enjoyed it even though this isn’t my style. 502Flavors (345), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Nov 27, 2008 12 oz bottle into chimay 20th anniversary glass. Rich golden color with some orange hue and lots of active rising carbonation bubbles. Aroma is inviting with lots of clove, yeast, and banana character. Flavor is the same (not my favorite style, but good). Typical on the palate - light bodied with tons of fine prickling carbonation (not my thing, but fit for the style). Overall: solid. ChainGangGuy (1721), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Nov 27, 2008 Appearance: Pours a clearish, orangey body with a large, pillowy, white head. Nice layering of lace on the way down.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, lightly toasted malts with a heavy addition of honey as well as caramel candy and notes of dried fruits and yeast.
Taste: Light caramel, orange blossom honey, and candi sugar envelop gently toasted malts. Dash of apricot juice. Pinch of spice. Mild hop character and accompanying bitterness. Subtle sour yeastiness. Warming alcohol presence and small bready hints on the drying finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Well carbonated.
Drinkability: Far better than even I had remembered. An enjoyable tripel -- quite drinkable, interesting, and readily available.
