COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Chimay Tripel, with its typical golden colour, its slightly hazy appearance and its fine head is especially characterised by its aroma which results from an agreeable combination of fresh hops and yeast. The beer’s flavour, as sensed in the mouth, comes from the smell of hops: above all it is the fruity notes of muscat and raisins that give this beer a particularly attractive aroma. The aroma complements the touch of bitterness. There is no acidity, but an after-bitterness which melts in the mouth. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.
Ingredients: Water, malted barley, wheat starch, sugar, hop extract and yeast. See Protz (beer-pages.com/protz/features/chimay.htm) and John White (www.whitebeertravels.co.uk/chimay.html)

UPDATED: APR 22, 2006 re-rate, 04-22-06, on tap: I finally found it on tap somewhere. And now I’m convinced. This beers has indeed more than just quality. On tap it’s also very nice to drink. Maybe just a bit more sweet, less carbonation, less harsh hops and fuller. re-rate 03-16-2003: Re-rated this once again and still I it doesn’t do it for me. Technically an ok beer, but the flavors, texture, carbonation and palate just aren’t mine. 03-18-1999, 2.7: Maybe I had an offday but I don’t think it’s that great compared to the other Chimay beers.

Bottle shared with (and courtasy of) Inbreak and ClubGonzo. Best before 2010. Has a hazy light brown colour, reminds me of sewer. A small light beige head. A lot of sweetness in the aroma with dried fruit, brown sugar and some heather honey, and a touch of alcohol. Much of the same stuff in the flavour but not that pronounced. Bitterness = light+. Slick and silky mouthfeel. A nice sweet aroma on this, but an okay flavour. The storing has affected the beer.

On tap at The Brew House, Altrincham. Golden with a big white head. Notes of pine, banana and spices in the aroma. Fairly thick and creamy, with a lemony sharpness and enough complexity to keep it interesting. Goes down very easily with alcohol well masked. Very good tripel.

About as good as it gets with this hugely complex and effervescent Tripel. The funky taste of raisins adds complexity and aroma.

Tap at Cheeky Monk. Poured a golden yellow with a fluffy white head and great lacing. Aroma is yeasty, spice, banana, fruit, some pineapple, and biscuit. Taste is biscuit and bread, banana, yeast, clove spiciness, and light alcohol, with a dry finish. Although, I pick the alcohol up slightly, it is hidden very well. Mouthfeel is medium with high carbonation. Overall a complex beer that is highly drinkable, crisp, and refreshing. Delicious.

Powerful aromas of coriander, barley, oats, yeast, and intense floral hops. Appearance is a darkened brownish gold with a massive white top. Immense explosion of flavors upfront. Some of which include biscuit/dough, coriander, barley, roasted nuts, oats, floral and citrus hops all topped off with a thick, creamy malt and heavy alcohol filled finish. Overal, this is a monster of a beer filled with geniusly blended flavoring and heavy alcohol warming. I highly suggest this to anyone. A+ rating
