COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Miner Mishap is our version of a traditional German Schwarzbier, also known as "Black Pilsner" or simply "Black Lager". Our traditional version was formulated by our friend William Scott (or Scotty as he’s known around the brewery), an award-winning homebrewer and certified beer judge who has always been very generous about sharing his creations and his seemingly unlimited knowledge of beer. It seemed only fitting that since we started out as a homebrewery, we would try and recreate one of Scotty’s homebrews (which are typically 5 or 10 gallon batched) here in our 15 barrel 鸑 gallon) brewhouse. Brewed almost entirely with malt imported from Weyermann Specialty Malts in Bamberg, Germany and hopped with Imported German Perle and Hallertaur Mittlefreu hops, Miner Mishap is truly a one-of-a-kind original.

Looks like cola. Has some cola taste, too, along with sweet chocolate and a kind of odd vegetable note.

12oz bottle 12/8/11 (Jack’s Mountain Home)-44° in Lager Glass-Pours dark brown/light black with a small tan ring for a head. Aroma of burnt malt, fruits, and chocolate. Taste of malt, chocolate, caramel, and slight vanilla. This medium bodied brew is not too shabby.

A rich roasty aroma. Very strong. This is a quite roasty schwarzbier; very thick and chewy, yet it just doesn’t sit quite right.

12oz bottle pours dark brown/ black with huge khaki head, actually upon opening the head started overflowing, maybe slightly carbonated. Aroma is earthy roasted malts, sweet chocolate, dark fruits, and molasses. Taste similar to aroma but as expected this is way over carbonated and has an acidity present that makes me feel like drinking the whole thing would indefinitely cause heartburn, drain pour.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 6/15/11, as Choc Miner Mishap

Aroma: Fairly light aroma that is mostly roasty, with some earthy notes, and a touch of caramel
Appearance: It pours a hazy brownish color with a smallish brown head and decent lacing
Flavor: The taste is much sweeter than the nose, lots of caramel and chocolate malts, lighter roast
Palate: The body is light-medium, it’s rather thin and quite watery on the mouth, with average carbonation
Overall Impression: I thought this one was pretty interesting. I felt this way mostly, becuase when the aroma lead me to believe that it was going to be a rather roasty and dry beer, so the flavor was completely unexpected. The sweet caramel flavor worked pretty well. I hadn’t beer too impressed with many of the other beers from Choc, but I enjoyed this one.

bottle-deep chestnut hue with a small kacki fizzy head. big nose of roast, dark chocolate, husky malts, and almost has a hit of a barrel aged character to it. kind of interesting! flavors characterize the burnt malt and roast-a licorice note as well. palte is a bit thin and really leads to a lesser score here. other than that, this is a very nice beer. there is a touch of sourness as the beer warmed a bit. not a bad beer and probably the best in the mix pack i had.

12 ounce stubby bottle. The label classifies this as a black lager, and the pour doesn’t disappoint. The color is a dark brown bordering on black, with a slight head that is more foamy than it is creamy. Head retention is better than what I’ve seen in other Choc beers. Likewise the aroma is strong, with some notes of coffee – specifically dark and earthy like coffee grounds. Some chocolate is there but it’s a supporting note and not the main focus. The first taste reveals a charbroiled meat, caramelized steak like afterfinish. One thing I can say for the Choc beers: The flavor profiles are certainly unique. Further exploration of the taste profile yields a nice chocolate note that really shines at the end of the taste. Toasted malt is present throughout. My only complaint is that I’d like this beer to be more chewy, as the relatively thin body sort of washes away under the complex flavor profile. The carbonation seems to be a little heavy handed as well. This is a beer that I think could benefit from a bit more of an aggressive streak, as the flavors would work great in a robust Baltic Porter or Russian Imperial Stout. Here however, they all come rushing out in the beginning but are washed away much too quickly.

21-Feb-11 (12-oz sample bottle: Free bottle for stewarding the 2008 World Beer Cup in San Diego, CA) This beer is fairly straight-forward from entry to finish, exhibiting pleasant flavors of almost-burnt toast, cola, dark chocolate, licorice, and blackstrap molasses. Toast, chocolate, and wet, autumn leaves in the nose. The weight is medium and the mouthfeel is dry, but the carbonation is medium-high, and this does tend to get in the way when trying to appreciate the flavors. Very dark brown and opaque through the center, but a hint of brown translucence at the edges. The beige head pours wafer-thin and dissipates quickly to a wide ring. Overall, not complex, but drinkable and enjoyable enough.
