Caramel and coffee aroma. Dark redish/brown colour, good lace. Sweet, caramel, full. The finish is light sweet, light bitter, hint of coffee but the fullness is immediatly gone.

Tontopf, Jena. Bottled. Poured a very dark brown body with an off white head. Sourish raisins in the nose, dust and maltiness. Dusty raisins and figs in the overly light taste before the sourness kicks in. Some dust and metal too. Some nice flavors in here but overall, it’s unfortunately a mess.

Aroma: Earthy, Musty, chestnuts, chocolate. Mouthfeel: Smooth and sticky. Taste: Sweetish, spicy, cola-like. Liquorice, some buttery, nutty notes. Somehow disturbingly sweet, probably due to the addition of sacharin. Finish: Mild, spicy, mouth warming. Overall: Distinct, but not good. Definitely not my kind of stuff, but it could go well with a cigar.

Bottle 500ml, bought in Prague. Dark brown color with medium beige head that disappeas rather quickly. Smells like roasted malts, caramel, some nuts and fruits. Nice mouthfeel, very little carbonation and thin body. Taste of malts, chocolate, caramel, syrup, bread and some liqorice. Quite sweet (sugary?) aftertaste and I miss at least some bitterness here. I don’t like the mixture that much. Very different to all other ’Schwarzbiers’ I’ve tasted. If you want to try something new it might be interesting, but nothing I would drink too often. Strange beer somehow.

Rating #621, bottle at Řst-řlsmagning

Bought in Ukraine at six times the price of any local beer I hoped this had something else to offer. The appearance was ordinary dunkel; brown-black with small head that never really develops. Aroma has coffee, chocolate, caramel and roasted malts. Flavor of unmatured grains, a bit liquoirce, a bit coffee and only a very light bitterness in the finish. Thin palate. A dunkel that leans towards a schwarzbier with failed bitterness. Drinkable, but not memorable.

Grima (1573) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - MAY 31, 2011
Deep ruby red color, very cloudy, fine head, which lasts long in the glass. It smells very malty sweet, light hop notes coming through as well. Starts with lots of caramelly and malty sweet aromas. The aftertaste resonates a little bitter, with a light caramel aroma. Great!
