A unique marriage between the English tradition of IPAs, the new American revolution of Imperial IPAs and the classic Belgian way of brewing. Houblon Chouffe, although very much hopped as it is, showcases the unique balance between a very strong IPA and a very special Belgian Tripel exclusively created for this ale (Big malty body, distinct dryness, expressive estery fruitiness). - IBU: 59, Original Gravity: 1092

750 mL bottle, "Best Before End 2009." Age or enjoy now? The may be not the right point to be considered cellared or new, but it may be my last big beer before vacation. I forget sometimes how deceptively light and golden the Belgian dubbel-tripel-quads are. Big rocky head. Beer is cloudy with visible floaty bits, which I never thought to see in a Tappist-based Belgian. Smell from the bottle is surprisingly grainy, just a whiff of hops. Grainy smell in my IPA tulip glass, too. A peak of foam sits about an inch above the rim like root beer float foam. Foam tastes a bit like an all-grain homebrewed IPA. Finally I can get down to the beer, and find the nice big, golden barleys of a true tripel. Hops are still present, but not to the level of a big American Pale Ale. Guess when this is around two years old, the hop sensation has migrated to the foam. Malt is light and smooth, but does carry the impression of alcohol that warns you to settle and don’t drink too much at once.

Presentation: It was poured from a green 1 pint 9.4oz bottle into a tulip glass. The abv is listed at 9% on the label and there is a nice description on the back. Appearance: It has a tall three finger thick head. This pillowy off white and long lasting head is sticky and leaves lace rings on the glass with each sip. Under the head I see a hazy golden liquid full of yeast sediment. Smell: I get floral hops with some fruity esters and funky Belgian yeast on top of pale malt sweetness. It is a funky hop delight! Taste/Palate: There is a pale malt base with funky yeast and plenty of floral hops with a touch of citrus hops as well. The floral hop flavor and bitterness slowly fades off the tongue in the finish. Lots of soft Champagne like carbonation gives this beer a lively texture in a firm medium body.

Been about time, hell well past it, that I FINALLY cracked this beer. And I want to kick myself for not. An excellent mix of triple with it’s delicious malt and yeast flavours, lemon and lime citruses, and well and a balanced hoppiness to rep the IPA. Nice.

Quelle amertume en entrée de bouche, puis de la douceur, pas de gout d’alcool. On sent tout le travail du houblon bien présent. Je ne lui donnerais pas le nom de IPA, mais c’est une bière instructive.

Bottle from Congress, Longton. Pours hazy amber with white froth. Easy drinking IPA, very hoppy, nice carbonation. Good stuff.

Reddish brown colour with light brown head. Aroma of hops, some herbs, spices, caramel, fruits, especially bananas, plums etc. The same is flavour, with low carbonation, little maltiness and medium carbonation. Not typical Abbey Tripel, but still very good.
