2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
330ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours ruby red, with a small brownish head. Aroma is sweet, reminds me of cough syurp. Great mouthfeel and body, but not a lot of flavour, mostly caramel sweetness.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
What a lovely beer. It isn’t a Vick beer to me, it is an autumn Bock stout infusion. The looks are quite nice. The color of the beer is a beautiful dark brown, almost black, oat first sight. When seen in adequate light, the beer unveils a beautiful rather reddish amber glow. The beer pours a massive amount of soft almond colored foam. The foam layer is perfect and fils the glass till the top. The bulk of the foam collapses rather quickly, only to leave a tiny drape of foam. The beer itself is very cloudy. The looks are normal for a bock, but this ends when you take a smell. The smell is much more like a stout, so I automatically love it. There is a delicious strong aroma of roasted barley. This bitter aroma is accompanied by a lovely oaky aroma. There are also some licorice and syrup aromas, to blend in a little sweetness. The smell is in real good balance and is quite strong. The roast aroma comes flying towards you. There is also a nice touch of alcohol in it. The smell is dead on stout. It has a delicious toasty and toasty baked barley flavor. This gives a rich bitter flavor to the beer. This bitterness is balanced by a syrup and candy sugar like sweetness, with a touch of fruity hops. The sweetness of the bock and the bitterness of a stout, what a genius combination. The sweetness fils the front of the mouth, whilst the bitterness fils the back. The finish is amazing. It starts with the remainder of the sweetness and slowly becomes more and more bitter and roasty. The beer has nice little gas bubbles. If the bubbles were slightly bigger and stingier, the palate would have been even better.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The new embodiment of this Dutch, bottom-fermented and therefore more or less German-inspired Doppelbock, with different bottle, different label and even slightly different name (spelled Bock instead of Bok now). Thick, ’papery’ lacing, pale greyish beige head, densely structured and stable, over a clear deep burgundy coloured beer with wine red hue. Aroma of caramelized brown sugar, butterscotch, coffee powder, roasted hazelnuts, dried banana, strong ’haemoglobin’ iron, hints of nutmeg, parsley, toasted vegetables, dried porcini, chestnut, cherry candy, old cloth and some dusty dry earth, black pepper. Candied brown sugar sweetness in the onset as well as raisin, banana and fig accents, rounded but well-dosed and not cloying, as it is being balanced by underlying sourishness and a slight mushroom-like umami flavor; softish carbonation, thick but smooth, slick body. Full caramelly and heavily toasted maltiness in the middle, more toastedly bitter than sweet and even a bit coffeeish and roasted in the end, mouth-filling, leading to a full-fledged malty, roasted and toasted bittersweet finish with some earthy, spicy hops made subordinate to the toasted malts; the caramelized or ’burnt’ sugar sweetness persists too (almost a touch candy-ish even) and matches well with this malt bitterness, and a strong, but fortunately not too astringent presence of brown rum-like alcohol is undeniable. Warming Dutch Doppelbock, pleasant enough and definitely one for the malt heads; the toasted bitterness is however much stronger in this one than in your average German style, bottom-fermented Doppelbock, but that makes this beer all the more interesting. Enjoyed it.

330ml bottle - thanks courier Stephan!
Lovely rich malty aroma, pleasant, but some slightly medicinal aspects. Rich brown, small persistent head. sweetish full palate. Totally grain oriented, but Tongue-scrapingly bitter finish, but I like that.

Ben normaal geen fan van bock maar deze is zeer geslaagd. Redelijk zoet, wat caramel en koffie en een licht frisse nasmaak.
