2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 bcbeer (10) - - JUL 11, 2006
Pours a dark reddish colour. Smells like a plain dark beer, nothing special. Small head. Tastes of burnt caramel, nuts. Long-lasting bitter aftertaste. Thin and bubbly on the tongue. Overall, nothing special for a dark beer.
3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 scottw86 (904) - Maryland, USA - MAY 13, 2012
Poured a very dark brown color with a slight red tint. Almost no head. Aroma has lots of dark fruits. Figs, plums, raisins, and grapes. Taste is a little strange. There is a slightly acidic feel to the body. A bit dry with lots of grape flavors towards the finish. Slightly sour in the middle with more fruity flavors. Finish has some syrup and brown sugar. Overall pretty interesting.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 15, 2012
Brown flip-top bottle, best before June 2011, drank and reviewed 7 Jan 2011.
Poured into a Duvel glass.
The body was a murky red/brown colour, more red than brown. The tan/cream coloured head was impressive for 20 seconds, it then began to fade away to leave a collar and some wisps within a minute, what a pity, my only fault.
Molasses and toffee apples were the smells I got, along with a mini-sourness, like cooking apples boiled without sugar.
The toffee and malty molasses dominate the taste, semi-sweet with a morsel citrus/hop bitterness in the background.
The bite was good, well carbonated without being at all gaseous or fizzy. The best beer of this type I’ve had so far. That includes Andechser Dunkel.
Impressed from start to finish (apart from the head fade).

11.2oz bottle in a lager glass. Pours ruby/brown with a thin, cream-colored head. Aroma of caramel and light grainy malts with a little toffee and some floral hops. Flavor the same. Smoother texture than most of this style. A decent beer.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 drjay44 (1733) - Salida, Colorado, USA - DEC 5, 2011
33 cl. swing top bottle. Pours a light beige head, with some lacing, over a hazy, particle laden, light brown (SRM 20) body....nose is cereal, light raisin, light molasses, yeast....taste is cereal with light raisin, fig, touch of molasses, finishing with hints of sweetness in the final light bitterness....mouth feel medium, carbonation low. This meets the style, but is not very interesting. I wonder, given the heavy presence of particles if this wasn’t mishandled at some point. BJCP 6/2/11/4/6

I will have to re-rate again after I get another bottle. I think I got an old bottle like some of the other raters did. Dark cloudy brownish-red. Malty with some dried cherry flavor. Very flat. A lot of sediment. Tried enough to get the flavor but didn’t finish as it seemed off. I could tell that it probably would have been quite nice if fresh. Serving: Bottle (Flip top)

330ml swing-top bottle from Beers of Europe. Oh, yummy. Big malty sweetness. Nice body - light enough to be refreshing and easy to drink, yet thick enough to be chewy and satisfying. Nice hop nip in the finish, lingering pleasantly. Good range of malt and hops flavours - toffee and banana notes alongside, earthy, herby flavours. Some spice and light citric fruit. Mmmmm, what a beauty. Enjoyed this one very much!
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 beerfest5 (806) - Simsbury, Connecticut, USA - JUL 17, 2011
Maybe a bad bottle, and the swing tops don’t hold out oxygen very well like corks or bottle caps do, so that might be why this was so disappointing. Brown color, not too appealing or unappetizing, just brown, very little carbonation which was probably a result of the oxygen. The taste was sickly sweet, like molasses, like it coated my tongue, I needed a glass of water to wash it down. Only tried it because it’s one of michael jacksons 500 classic beers.
