COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As the Pilsner beer spread through Germany in the late 1800’s the Darker beers were fading in popularity but in Munich they were still king. Eventually Munich’s response to the foreign pilsner was the “Helles” Lager. Lighter in color, with less hop flavor and bitterness than the Pilsner. A well developed bready flavor was the main highlight of the Helles. Today the Helles beer is the everyday drinking beer in Germany. It’s malty, balanced, easy-drinking character has earned it the sobriquet “liquid bread”, and it is often served for breakfast. Helles retains less alcohol than a Pilsner, averaging between 4.5-5 percent; they are more full bodied, than thin.

Draft at the ’nut. Super fresh, just went on today I’m told. Pours a vibrant clear golden straw yellow. Small yet tight white head with faint lacing. Nice light corny sweetness, doughy pils malt and bright grassy Nobel hops on the end. Balanced sweet corn, pils malt, doughy bread, fresh hay, clean grassy hops. Super clean and crisp...another please.

Tap on a hot day at Fiddler’s Inn.

I’m not hugely experienced with the style, but this one seemed to be crafted with care, a very well done if somewhat subtle beer. The expected bready flavors, more malty than yeasty of course, a subtle bitter crispness underneath the caramel to finish it off very nicely. Well done!

Nose is nice and malty, bready, solid medium sweetness, light earth and maybe grass. Pale golden pour, thin head. Flavors of bready malts, sweet cookie dough perhaps, earthy bitterness in finish. Nice beer, super drinkable. Malty and enjoyable.

Bright straw with a limited head. Vague, slightly grainy character. Very soft with bready malts, herbal notes and fresh cracked grains. Ok, not the most helles example of a helles I’ve had.

Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Vibrant amber, a little fiery, clear, lively carbonation, minor head, a few rings of lacing.   A little deeper in color than I expected, but that’s coo.   Big straw nose, slight malty sweetness.   Sweet grassiness on the tongue.   Very crisp and clean.   Seems a little bigger, flavorful, and more robust than most.   It is a welcomed change.   Heavy grassiness on the finish, but also very sweet.   Very slight corn tortilla on the finish.   Good, a little heavier and dark for the style.   Decent one, a little change up that is welcomed.   Not your average light Helles.   Know that!

(Draught at GABF) clear, soapy/frothy white bubbles. Nose of toasty raw grain mash, honey, wheat bread. Quite sweet smelling. Taste of sweet grain, mild butter, bit stale bread. Oily and soapy finish/body.
