COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the city of Köln, Germany (pronounced Cologne) they drink and brew Kolsch Beer and the brewers’ guild has protected it since 1254. Kolsch is a top-fermented ale, a throwback to the days before lagers took over the Germanic world. Cologne, far closer to Brussels than to Munich, has always had close links to the Low Countries, and these links extended to the local beer culture. The Kolsch offers the simple pleasures of a well crafted beer. It is very pale in color, and the aromatics are a light mélange of hops, malt, and fruit. The Kolsch Beer maintains a bitterness that is quite restrained, although the palate is light-bodied and bone-dry, with a soft malt flavor in the center giving way to a drying, slightly acidic finish. Smoothness is conferred by one to two months of cold conditioning.

This pleasant offering rides the rail between ales and lagers. Clean, with a malt dominance that showcases the quality grains that Will Kemper uses in all his beers. Refreshing, dry finish, but enough body and substance to be more than a lawnmower beer. Light hint of fruity esters adds to character.

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2014 Tap at the brewery. Very light straw, beautiful light grassy German hop aroma. Cracker flavors with plenty of lemon and dry hop bite. Not light on the flavor at all; this is a goregous Kolsch that I could drink the shit out of on a hot summer’s day.

Growler from Bob’s. I don’t know if I’d go 4.2, but I’d go close to 4.0 and dang is a nice beer.

Shaker pint draft at the brewpub in Bellingham, Washington. Pour is perfectly clear golden yellow with a one inch pure white head. There are a bunch of effervescent bubbles rising to the surface throughout the beer. Aroma is mildly sweet maltiness, with grass and mineral earthiness. Taste is a perfect combination of the mild sweetness, grassy hay and mineral. Soft, super and fresh, perfectly clean, delicious. Palate is medium to thin bodied, active carbonation - clean and dry in the finish. Crazy drinkable, really nice stuff.

Clear. Chalky apple fruitiness all over the nose. Fresh, biscuity and fruity. So smooth, slick. A little interestingly flavored but Stella drinkin’ beer.

Sample at GABF 10/13/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. The beer is a clear straw color with a medium white head and spotty lacing. Aroma of malt and grassy hops. Light-bodied with flavors of bready malt, mild hops and fruit. The finish is mildly bitter with an herbal hops aftertaste. Above average Kölsch overall.
