Pilsner, the world’s most popular style of beer, was invented in Czech Bohemia, perfected in Germany, and turned into flavorless mass-market fizz in America. Genuine Pilsner is a thing of beauty; it is delicate, sharp, flavorful, aromatic, and appetizing. While most people think pilsner came from Germany, its origins actually come from Bohemia. In 1842, a Bavarian monk smuggled lager yeast from Munich to the Bohemian town of Pilsen. Brewer, Jesef Grolle, used the lager yeast with British malting techniques to make pale malt, but was able to craft an even lighter malt, creating a beer golden in color. Only one year prior, Spaten brewery had stunned and delighted the people of Munich with it’s light bronze Marzen beer, before this time all beers had been dark and murky. Grolle’s Pilsner beer grabbed people’s attention and changed the world of beer. It had the color of burnished gold, and light sparkled straight through the glass, as no one had ever seen before. Cold fermentation left the beer clear and bright after it’s long aging process. The sharp clean bitterness with flowery aromatics was created from local Saaz hops. High levels of natural carbonation in Pilsner result from the long aging process, creating a pillowy white head on top of the golden liquid. People were captivated, and word of the new golden pilsner beer raced past the borders of Bohemia and swept throughout Europe. Genuine pilsner is truly mouthwatering, deeply satisfying, and incomparably refreshing! Original Gravity 12.5 Plato ABV 5% IBU’s 38

Sampled on 10/11/12 at GABF. This Pilsner pours a light gold color from the tap. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is cereal, fruity and spicy. A medium bodied Pilsner. The malts are cereal, fruity and sweet. The hops are herbal and spicy. Mild carbonation. Nice balance. Light crisp and clean pilsner. Very nice beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Draft at brewery: Wonderful pilsner. Crisp, aromatic and dry, just like I like them. Bright golden hue. Bready, cracker-like malts. Snappy Saaz hops provide bright aromas (floral and herbal) and a healthy bitterness. Clean and very easy to quaff.

8 oz sample at Collins Pub. Metallic, spicy aroma with some cereal hints. Light sweetness is also present. Nicely aromatic. Transparent yellow body with a small, white head present. Starts a little sweet. Light honey character. Becomes a little spicy and grassy in the middle. Nice pilsner maltiness in the finish, along with some grassy hop flavors. A really awesome pils!

Draught at Walrus and Carpenter, 11/7/15.
Clear, highly carbonated deep golden liquid supports a medium-sized white head with moderate to moderately-high retention.
Good burst of zesty, spicy and floral hop notes in the nose with a strong sweet hay-like character behind it. Clean, with no alcohol and good minerality. Not too heavy on the doughiness.
Moderately sweet, with a strong maltiness yielding plentiful, rich honey notes that are well-balanced by liberal hopping adding spicy herbs and such things as we know and love from the saaz hop. Very carbonated, but it’s not sharp or fizzy and keeps it very refreshing. No flaws and quite clean.
These guys just won Gold for their Kolsch at GABF, which, in my mind is one of the biggest accomplishments you can have in the beer world (a gold in kolsch or a light lager category). Those are tough styles to do competently, let alone on a gold medal level.

Bottle. Pours a light golden straw color topped with an ample layer of sea foam. Classic Pils aroma of grassy hops, toasted grains and lemon. Taste is along the same lines with notes of floral hops, honey and toasted grain sweetness. Well done interpretation of the style that will definitely have a place in my fridge, especially come summertime.
