UPDATED: NOV 9, 2009 In my initial rating of this lager, tasted fresh on site, I found it to be too forward with the smokiness, masking the subtlety of the fine lagers that Will Kemper and brewer Josh Kveim have been producing since arriving in town. However, it seems they’ve dialed the smokiness down a notch, and my last tasting was delightful, with a wonderful balance of light smoke with fine malt aroma, flavor, and aftertaste

Draft at the Collins Pub. Pours a bright coppery dark gold with a woolly platinum blond head. Nice bacony campfire nose. Creamy medium body, nice richness to it for a lager yeast. Lively carb. Bacon and campfire on the mid palate, very harmonious and balanced. Some malty complexity lingering under that but this isn’t a flavor profile to break down to component parts. It’s one to enjoy in its singularity. Great rauch.

Draft @ Brouwers; clear light orange with thin white head; aromas of light smoked malts, caramel and nuts; drinks with lovely smooth texture and mouthfeel of malty goodness; nice level of smokiness with a raw almost fruity texture; dry subtle smoke; good stuff and one I’ll drink again the next time I see it

Draft@ Brouwers Cafe. Clear amber with a white head. Spicy, yeasty lager aroma with light smoke. Smooth medium body. Flavors mirror the aroma with spicy yeasts and bready pale malts with some smoke in the background. Not too bad.

Tap at Naked City. Golden amber pour, no head really. The aroma is of light smokey campfire and some bready sweetness. Aroma is pretty light really. The flavor is an initial medium smokiness followed by sweet bready malts, crisp hops, and then more smoked malt which lingers for a minute, but still finishes rather clean like a marzen usually does.

Draft at Naked City Taphouse in Seattle. Pour is dark golden, clear, with a very small off white head. Aroma is very faint, really not much there at all. Perhaps a touch of toasty maltiness. The taste reveals the smoked malt, and its really nicely melded into a solid malty, hay lager. The smoke is very much a complement to the base beer. The smoked malt carries the aftertaste, which is very clean. Really nice beer, and very drinkable. Smoked malt was a bit of a palate killer, but who cares this was tasty.

Draught from Bottleworks. Transparent copper-colored appearance. Doesn’t look impressive. Bacon and smoke are noticed, while giving it a quick sniff. A subtle malt sweetness compliments the light smoke and cooked bacon flavors. The texture is great; it provides just the right amount of body . An eas drinker, with great flavors. Sent from my Droid.

Slight smoked malt this beer was fresh and tasty. The aroma was light the malts where rich and the beers was very flavorful. This was decent but I was hoping for more smoked flavor. Nothing too much just a good amount more.
