COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dortmunder Export or Dortmunder is a pale lager from the city of Dortmund in Germany. Originally brewed by Dortmunder Union in 1873, this soft pilsner style beer became very popular with industrial workers, and was responsible for Dortmunder Union becoming Germany’s largest brewery and Dortmund having the highest concentration of breweries in Germany. With the decline of heavy industry in the area, the sales of Dortmunder also declined until, by 1994, the Dortmund Union brewery had shut down, and merged with several other Dortmund breweries to form Brinkhoff’s Brewery Dortmund was one of the earliest commercial brewing centres in Germany, establishing itself as a major brewing city which exported its beers to the neighbouring Westphalian cities. The Dortmunder breweries originally brewed a wheat based, dark coloured, short fermented beer. However, in 1873, when the golden coloured, pale barley based, slow fermented beer as brewed in Pilsen and known as Pilsener, became popular, several of the local breweries grouped together under the name Dortmunder Union to produce their own pale lager under the guidance of the brewmaster Fritz Brinkhoff. There were originally two varieties: Lagerbier and the stronger Export. The weaker version proved less popular and was eventually dropped. The beer from Dortmunder is a pale lager influenced by the golden beer from Pilsen known as Pilsner, though is mainly labelled as Dortmunder Export. Like all other pale lagers the beer is a pale gold colour, with a moderate bitterness from the noble hops, a lean, well attenuated body, and a crisp carbonation. The local water contains a fairly high amount of sulfate, which gives the beer’s taste a slight element of sulfur. It also contains more calcium carbonate (chalk) than average which tends to give a sharpness to the flavour of the hops. Brewers use less hops to avoid the harsh hop notes, giving the beers a subtle emphasis on the malt flavours. Prost, Brewer B * A sincere thank you to Wikipedia. I ran out of time to do a personal description.

Draft at CBW. Poured light amber in color with small white ring of bubbles in the glass. Aroma is malty, caramel sweetness. Taste is of slightly sweet caramel malts and very mild hop presence. ok.

Barely any aroma but if you try hard I think I smell a little bit of candy sweetness in there. Clear and just slightly more gold than the ubiquitous pale yellow american beer, leaning on the orange side. It has a tea froth head. Barely any carbonation but it has just enough tingle to let you know it’s not flat. At first palate commencement there is a cotton candy sweetness about it. But that evolves into a slightly more bitter taste bud impact. Each sip is a metamorphis from friendly to medium bitter. Finish leaves a medium hop bitter linger that hangs for a while almost like a pale ale. Overall, not bad for a lager. Has enough personality to let you know you are drinking beer, but not over the top bitterness.

From a growler, almost no head. Clear, light brown/orange color. A really grainy smell. The flavor is mildly bitter with lots of wheat/barley stuff happening in the back of the mouth. Pretty refreshing, like 麦茶.

This is my first new CBW beer in a while, since I missed the Biere de Noel by 3 hours on Christmas Eve. :(

Growler from the CBW. Clear orange amber, off white head. Aroma is malt, caramel, hops, metal (copper). Flavor is the same. NIce malty/hoppy balance. The body is light and refreshing. This is very drinkable.
