COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Next specialty beer is the Halbert’s Saison. Saisons are a rustic farmhouse ale brewed in the French speaking region of southern Belgium. Originally brewed to refresh and sustain laborers of the farms during the hot summer months. Saisons may also be brewed with spices and several commercial breweries change there spice bill annually. If you ask several brewers to describe a Saison you will more than likely get several different responses. This is what gives this truly unique brew its allure. Our version of this classic is a spiced version. When you smell the beer you will notice an earthy nose reminiscent of tomatoes. The taste is crisp with notes of licorice and spice. The spicy dry finish comes from, the addition of grains of paradise to the boil. The other spices we used are licorice root and bitter orange peel. The hop bill was kept low in order for the spice to shine. I hope everyone enjoys our interpretation of this mysterious brew.

A- Cloudy straw yellow body with thin white head. The head eventually fades to a collar and the brew leaves behind some lacing in the glass. The fog in this beer moves around and makes it seem alive. S- Light nose of spicy belgian yeast. In the background are sour earthy esters, coriander, and hints of citrus. T- Strong sour estery and somewhat acidic taste all the way through. Spicy belgian yeast upfront with citrus and coriander in the background. The finish is somewhat acidic. Spicy belgian yeast remains on the palate. P- Light carbonation and smooth yeasty body. Goes down easy. O- This is a decent saison with a nice farmhouse feel. This is a little bit spicier than others that I have tried but thats a good thing. Something I would like to order again. Draft at the brewpub. Hazy gold with a thin white head. Sweet fruity aroma with apricot and spices. The flavor has has a dry clove like spiciness and a touch of fruity sweetness. Not bad.

Draft... Hazy golden ale with little to no head. The ultra fruity, lightly toasted nose is chock full of apricot, peach, pear, green apple and orange peel in tandem with a bold, clove-like phenol. Light to medium-bodied with lazy carbonation. Fruity, sweet flavor - mildly acidic. Finishes up crisp, spicy and lightly bitter

Draft at CBW. Pours a lovely golden with white head, as expected. Aroma is as expected for the style, mostly stewed malts and spices. I don’t know where they come up with tomatoes. The body of this goes against every other saison I have ever had. Starts traditional citrus and spice but quickly turns very, very harsh with alcohol and lemon peel. This really put me off, I haven’t had many but I’ve had some of the best and I would consider it one of my more favorite styles.

YUCK! Worst saison I’ve ever had. Aroma was plastic with metal. Pour was a dirty light brown with no bubbles and no head. Taste was stale bubble bath with the yeast and spices coming through in the aftertaste. Little to no carbonation. Each sip was a struggle.

On tap in the Church. Glass held a cloudy gold/amber body with little to no head. Understated aromas of butterscotch and grain. Flavor starts off with a fairly buttery and sweet malt presence that the gives way to spice and yeast which covers a little bit of a metallic edge. I sure though this was awful at first, but it seemed to get better the longer it sat out.

Hazy with a pleasant aroma. Taste was decent, slightly spicy but the flavor fell short and there was a hint of funk that turned me off.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2007 Slightly hazy but otherwise typical pale yellow american lager color. Beery aroma and perhaps it has a little spice in there too. Medium mild carbonation. Taste is also a bit spicey like a wheat beer or american hefe. Some mild bitterness may be detectable and builds through the session. Mild mannered and well behaved. This is easy to enjoy. Somewhat like many wheat beers I’ve had.

Draft, Church Brew Works. Pours a hazy, yellowish-white color; white head with patchy lacing. Warm floral and doughy notes in the aroma; quite pleasant. Light carbonation. Medium mouthfeel: plenty of dough and bready warmth; nice density for a 4.6% saison; minimal spice and very drinkable, unlike a lot of saisons I’ve had recently. Medium, doughy and toasted malt finish; slightly grainy.
