COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This porter is an American brown porter meaning that it is not as dark and rich as a British porter. We also used American hops from the Pacific Northwest instead of English Goldings and Fuggles usually present in this style o f beer. Black strap molasses was added during the boil to boost the gravity. Also, the molasses adds sweetness to the finished product. Lactose and pure hazelnut extract were added during the whirlpool. This helps balance the sweetness with a nice creaminess. The aroma of the beer is of chocolate and hazelnut. When you first taste the beer you will notice roasted sweetness and it will finish with a subtle taste of hazelnut. The hops were kept low so that bitterness does not outshine the creaminess of this beer. Details: Grain Used: Pale, Caramel, Munich, Chocolate, and Black Malt Hops Used: Palisade, Glacier, and Mt Hood Original Gravity: 14.2.P or 1.056 S.G. Hop Bitterness: 30 IBU’s

A nice and flavorful porter from CBW. Aroma (like most of their beers) was pretty weak and metallic. Pour was a deep dark roasted brown with a thin tan ring for a head. Taste was roasted malt in the front but it immediately gives way to a huge caramel and molasses flavor that rides through to the aftertaste. Hints of vanilla come in and out along with a candylike Caramello flavor. Little carbonation but the flavor carries this beer. The cask version is even more sweet and candylike.

On tap at CBW 03.35.09. Opaque black brown, off white head. Aroma is super hazelnut, slight fruit. Flavor is sweet: fruity, nutty, and milky (vanilla ice cream). This is sort of like a hazelnut latte and is a bit too sweet for me. I could see some people really digging this though.

On tap at the brewpub. Color of ochre-tinted earth, with a fringe in tan and faint rim in off-white. Nutty, almost-Nutella aroma. Soft. Flavor is piquant and prickly, but develops as a Starbucks infused Torani-Hazelnut syrup Italian Creme Soda or maybe a Steamer. Artificial and syrupy. Some mildly interesting combinations of the hazlenut syrup and darker malts, but mostly a one-dimensional show that’s artificial and going nowhere.
