The team at Church Brew Works made up of Steve Sloan (Church), Steve Crist (Penn) & Shawn Setzenfand (Hofbräuhaus) decided to increase the degree of difficulty and brew a sour mash Red Ale for their offering. To impart a sour or tart tang to the finished beer, the brewers added some additional German Pilsner grain to the wort and let it sit overnight, allowing Lactobacillus bacteria to produce acid that will yield the desired souring effect. Sour beers are a growing segment of craft beer in this country, and while sometimes an acquired taste, fans of these beers will go to great lengths to sample them when available on draught. Demand for the Inaugural Ale will be high, so look for it at Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week events and see if you catch the “sour fever” like so many other craft beer lovers throughout Pittsburgh.

This poured a ruby red color with a biege head. Aroma was sour dough bread, caramel, nuts, and metal. Flavor was over the top metalic blended with a tart twang and some base red beer elements This one just didnt work well at all.

On tap at Bocktown. Amber red ale, hazy with no head. Medium body and medium carbonation. Smells of grain dust and mild malty richness, with a bit of sour mash. Predominantly malty, with caramel and biscuit with undertones of sour character. Light bitter finish with malty-tart after.

Unique effort for the PGH RB? Craft brew week 2012. Hazy and darker muddy brown fun appearance. Mild aroma of slag, yum. First taste is mild, behaved and well behaved. Has a slight tart thing in there that could not be identified by anybody but the seasoned of tasters. NICE! Good fine co2 in there. Very easy and relaxing. I can appreciate a beer like this in a session. Good overall beer drinken experience.

On Tap at Dive Bar. Rather dissappointing, it is far from a sour. maybe a little aging will help. Amber and nice head, stong musty note not typical of a sour.

Draft. A nice tart sour red, but I wasn’t too impressed. Mainly, I was just excited to kick off the first ever Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week! I’m not sure on the alcohol percentage, so if anyone knows for sure, please edit the info. The appearance was a red tinted copper, nice frothy head, with a tart sour scent of medium strength. The palate was a lighter medium body with a crisp finishing texture, fizzy on the tongue during the aftertaste. The taste was a little disappointing. It was a tasty brew, but I expected it to be a little more potent. A grain note start that quickly yields to a tart filled sour with an acidic afterburn, but a little too weak for my liking, thus the lower taste rating. Overall, a solid beer I’d drink again. I just hope they pump it up a little if they do this brew next year.
