The Mad Brewer Maibock was the Silver Medal winner at the 1999 and 2000 Great American Beer FestivalÔ in the German Bock category. In celebration of our second silver medal in a row f or this beer, we are bringing the Mad Brewer Maibock out at an unseasonal time. A bock beer is required by German law to start at 17°Plato. For those who are interested, °Plato is a measurement of the sugar content before fermentation. It is a very malty lager beer with medium hop bitterness. A maibock is a light colored bock beer. A Maibock is very similar to a Helles/pale bock,. Maibocks we originally brewed for the coming of spring, hence the name Mai (German for May). The Mad Brewer Maibock is fairly light in color. It is similar in color to our Pipe Organ Pale Ale, but very different in character. Don't let it get you though, it's a very strong beer at about 7% alcohol. It has a very clean and malty nose. The hop bitterness is evident, but not dominant. The Mad Brewer Maibock will finish quite full and have a delicate sweetness.

Draft at the brewpub. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of grassy hops, apples, lightly toasted malts. The taste is toasted caramel malts and mild spicy hops. Medium bodied.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2006 Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a bright golden color with a small white head. The aroma is sweet and almost honey like. The flavor is sweet and honeyish with a roasty bitterness that follows. There is a mild alcohol flavor that intrudes.

Copper color with a small off white head and some nice lacing. Earthy and malty aroma. Nice toasted malts, some caramel, lightly hopped. Could not taste the 7% here. Decent bock, thanks cb and TAR!

On tap at the Works. Smell is a little beery typical, but not bready yeasty...just plain beery if that makes any sense. Color is a little lighter than reddish orange but certainly darker than a pale yellow american lager. Very little carbonation. A little bitterness like most hellers. The flavor is not out of place for a maibock. Has a slight bitterness on the back of the throat. Finish is non-offensive and happy. Good overall maibock, would not hesitate to purchase again. Better than Erie Fleece Maibock. Not as good as Victory St. Boisterous Hellerbock.

Piney gold-amber, whitish oatmeal head. Slightly candied fruit and cereal aroma, which was a bit muted. Grassy, low bittering, low carbonation. A bit doughy, not sweet. Goes a little boozy on the backend with a toasted alcohol finish. Silky mouthfeel, medium body.

Tap @ the brewpub, comes with a strong small head that never fades atop a dark copper/brown color. Aroma is strong on the maltiness and light sweetness represented with dank malts. and even some dank hops as well. Flavor has a nice sweetness with a but of a woodsy maltiness and clearer hops (indistinct). I like the sweetness but seems unnatural for the style.

A near average heller bock. Aroma was weak. Could pick up some stale hops and caramel malt. Pour was a nice medium amber with a one finger off whie head. Taste was a little thin. Mostly caramel malt and a thin hoppy backbone. Light carbonation but flavor was strong enough to look past that.

Coppery peach. Creamy, yet loosly-packed, light caramel ring. Mineral, toast, and lots of caramel in the nose. Butter, fusel alchol, and spicy hops underneath. Quite grainy and sweet. Soft, fluffy carbonation. Slippery body. Starts with subdued hop spice and overstated, unclean alcohol. Butter toffee and toasted malts flood the palate with sweetness as faint notes of yeast poke through. Toasted pale malts dominate the center amid datelike/stewed plum interplay. Glazed maltiness continues to override the juicy hops in the finish, leaving behind a jumbled mess of sugar and sweaty yeast. This needs more dryness, a brighter hop profile (in the aroma and flavor dept.), less-prevalent alchol, etc. in order to reduce the oversweet mushy malts.

Dark amber, short ring of head, some lacing. A very malty brew, mostly sweet - caramel toffee, toasty bread, fruity. Minimal hops at the end - the sweetness continues on, uninterupted.

Light copper appearance with a dominant malty aroma. Flowery, fruity, slightly sweet flavor with very little hoppy taste. Finish was mildly acidic.
