COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Porter is a style of beer which originated in London, England in the 1700’s. It became very popular there until it’s decline in the 1930’s. A separate style of beer evolved from a porter, called a stout. Now a porter is typically the step between a brown ale and a stout in both color and body. Our Penance Porter is a robust porter. The color is very dark but not black. You may notice some dark red color. The aroma is noticeably roasty with a complex ester (fruit-like) quality. It is also dry hopped with Cascade hops, so you my notice a floral note in the nose. The body will be quite full and rich with caramel notes and more roastiness. When the beer finishes the bitterness from the hops nicely balances the caramel maltiness, then lingers for a moment before it’s gone.

This poured a very dark brown color with an off white head. Aroma was roasted malts, caramel, and some chocolate. Flavor was dark chocolate, toffee, roasted malts, and a lingering burned finish. Godd Stuff.

On Draft

Poured dark with ruby tones. Bubbly, white head. Carbonation good. Aroma of malts. Taste of malts and slight alcohol and woodsy tones. Slightly bitter in the end. Not much of an aftertaste cold, but I got alcohol in the aftertaste as it warmed. Mouthfeel light.

Cask-Conditioned

This was my first cask-conditioned beer. Served warm. Dark w/ ruby tones. Thick creamy, frothy, white head. Nice lacing. Aroma malty and floral. Taste malty and slightly bitter with some alcohol flavor and chocolate hints in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel light.

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2006 Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a dark black color with only a trace of a tan head. There is a mild dry malt aroma. The mouthfeel is thin and watery. The flavor is very dry and has a mild malt presence. Little body or finish. A well below average porter.

Draught @ Church Works: This beer pours an opaque brown color. It had a small tan head that left quite a bit of lacing. The aroma was a bit mild. It contained hints of sweetness and chocolate. The taste is towards the lighter side of medium. It was dry, with some roasted chocolate and coffee notes, as well as a hint of bitterness. Also some hints of fruits and a sweetness that lingered a bit. A pretty good session beer.

a nice heavy DARK porter. Color and flavor wise. The alcohol was very present, yet it still fit the beer well. Happy Birthday to the Brew Works!
