Commercial Description:
About 150 years ago, this dark style lager was first brewed in Munich, Germany. Our version is fairly dark in color, but don’t be afraid. It is a perfect example that dark beers are not always strong beers. The body is surprisingly mellow, and the alcohol content is a bit lower than most people might think. It has a wonderfully clean and roasty aroma. Hop bitterness levels are kept in line, but is has a noticeable hop flavor. Our Pious Monk Dunkel finishes crisp and clean as a lager should.

Never heard of a non-pious monk, frankly. Decent pour, slightly clear body. Very malty with a hoppy finito. Some mint aftertaste, not unusual for CBW. Not the best e.g. of the style, but it did its job...provided me with alcohol.

Bottle thanks to Daniel. Pours out a ruby/brown color with a small white head. The aroma is mostly toasted malts, some light fruits and perhaps s touch of banana. The flavor is similar; lots of toasted malts, some bananas, clove and something odd I can’t put my finger on. Fizzy and full of flavor. Decent overall.

Pours amber, beige head. Aroma is malty / caramel, earthly hops. Taste, malty with some ncie chocolate notes with subtle nutty addition. Beer is well balanced, light hops giving an alsmot dark fruits flavor, with an always present nice chocolate / caramel malts. Finish leaves some light bitter hops. Beer became more enjoyable as it warmed up. One great dunkel.

Very dark brown, minimal head. Faint aroma of brown malt. Taste of brown malt, nice bitterness but no discernible hop flavor. Thin (but not watery) body, medium carbonation with dry finish. Mild yet enjoyable brew.

(A gift from a friend’s trip back east). Effectively zero psst when popping the cap, but poured a nice head with fair amount of carbonation. Bottle is nice dark orange, with shades of brown, as would be expected in a dunkel. Aroma is light, but definately has traits of malt to it. Malt character also in the flavor profile. It says its a dunkel, but to me it has a yeasty taste to it, reminiscent of a Belgian yeast, with s bitter/sour hoppiness in the aftertaste. Trying to decide what to think of this beer. To me it doesn’t match the typical dunkel flavor profile, but its not necessarily bad.

[1281-20080410] 12floz bottle. Toasted mouldy grains aroma has a hint of garbage, hay straw and crayon wrapper. Clear, rich amber body with quick white creamy bubbles. Mildly sour brown ale flavour characteristics with basic grains and toasted malt. Medium body is mostly mid-notes. Weird floral background.
(c/o GregClow, w/ blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc, tupalev)
