5/02/2008: The Church Brew Works Pious Monk Dunkel is a Munich Dunkel-Style Lager that has a clear chesnut brown color with a lasting, frothy light tan crown. The beer smells like gently roasted malt with some hints of citrus and clover. The flavor is failry weak and only contains some toasted maltiness with a touch of chocolate and hoppy bitterness in the finish. LIke the other brews I have had from The Church Brew Works, this beer tends to the sweet and grainy since of things. However, it does have a medium-light body that is just about silky on the palate. Overally this is a decent stab at a Dunkel, but it comes off a bit too soft and bland.
12 fl. oz. bottle from Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #86 for this beer...
robertjm (235), El Cerrito, California, USA Aug 19, 2008 (A gift from a friend’s trip back east). Effectively zero psst when popping the cap, but poured a nice head with fair amount of carbonation. Bottle is nice dark orange, with shades of brown, as would be expected in a dunkel. Aroma is light, but definately has traits of malt to it. Malt character also in the flavor profile. It says its a dunkel, but to me it has a yeasty taste to it, reminiscent of a Belgian yeast, with s bitter/sour hoppiness in the aftertaste. Trying to decide what to think of this beer. To me it doesn’t match the typical dunkel flavor profile, but its not necessarily bad. mabel (1583), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 4, 2008 [1281-20080410] 12floz bottle. Toasted mouldy grains aroma has a hint of garbage, hay straw and crayon wrapper. Clear, rich amber body with quick white creamy bubbles. Mildly sour brown ale flavour characteristics with basic grains and toasted malt. Medium body is mostly mid-notes. Weird floral background.
(c/o GregClow, w/ blankboy, HogTownHarry, jerc, tupalev) dmtroyer (332), Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA Jul 26, 2008 Draft at the brewery. A very exciting pour, dark brown with an off-white head and carbonation racing up the sides. The nose is something I could not place, but resembles butterscotch. Body is similar with some green tea and other astringent aspects. The carbonation is great, the body is just a bit thin. Beerlando (1237), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 20, 2008 Pours a clear, dark amber color with a chestnut tint. A small, frothy, cream colored head is quickly fleeting, leaving fluid, soapy lacing behind on the glass. The aroma shows notes of cocoa, traces of mocha, earthy hops, and indiscernible dark fruits. The flavor is nice, and very well balanced. Dry cocoa and mildly sweet dark fruit notes are countered by a slightly pungent yeast component and some spicy, earthy hops. Medium-light bodied and lightly carbonated, the balance lends nice drinkability, and the low ABV makes for a decent little session brew. afireinside96 (390), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 14, 2008 12oz bottle served in a shaker glass. Pours light brown with a very thin layer of bubbles on top. Smells of cocoa, dough, and a bit of coffee. Malt dominates the flavor, some earthiness from the hops. Well balanced.
