COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our next specialty #3 brew is the St. James Biere de Garde. This style originates in the northern French departments (counties), Pas de Calais and Nord along the English Channel and Belgian border. Biere de garde is the French contribution to the world of brewing. The style is a fine example of the artisan practice of brewing. These beers got there start being brewed in farmhouses as opposed to large commercial breweries that preferred to brew lighter lagers. The style is brewed with a top fermenting yeast strain like traditional ales. However, after fermentation unlike ales the beer is stored cold or “garded” from four to six weeks. This gives the beer its smooth malty finish. Our example of this style sticks to tradition. When you taste the beer you will notice the big malty body. The hop character is subtle but it will linger after you’ve finished your sip. I did this on purpose so that the malt body will shine. The finish is smooth and dry with a little lingering alcohol burn. I hope everyone enjoys this interpretation of my favorite style of beer.

Clear copper color with no head. Aroma of flowers, spice, caramel. Lots of dark fruit, caramel and spice in the taste. Slight hops at the end. Very sweet.

Sampled on draft at the brewery this beer poured a dark caramel-amber color with a medium sized beige head that lingered. The aroma was very faint with notes of fruit and malt. The flavor was tangy and sugary with notes of honey, candied pear, tart apricot, caramel, peach jam, pepper and noticable alcohol. The finish was long, tangy, tart, sugary and had lingering pear. The alcohol continues to show through. Boozy but very interesting.

A- Medium Brown body with ruby, rose, and plum highlights. The color of this brew is simply beautiful. Pours with a thin 1/2 finger white head that eventually fades completely. Little to no lacing is left behind in the glass. S- Light nose. Earthy cellar-like esters and spicy belgian yeast dominate with dark fruits and caramel malt in the background. T- Spicy Belgian yeast and dark fruits like plum and grape upfront. Caramel malt and mild hops can be noted in the background. Finish is a balance of spicy ale yeast and caramel malt. A slight alcohol burn kicks in at the very end. Spicy yeast and caramel malt with a hint of earthy esters linger. P- Medium carbonation and yeasty body. Goes down fairly easy. O- The alcohol is quite noticeable in this brew but that is characteristic of the style. Its a tasty brew with a decent mouthfeel and it was good enough for me to bring a growler home with me. I hope this is something that CBW decides to put on rotating release. Great experience for my first brew of this style. Serving type: growler Reviewed on: 08-12-2007 01:33:28

Tasted this with zebracakes. Darker than expected, I guess this is my first biere de garde. Not sure if this really is one and I see on this page it is not. Malty alky and tasty. Unrefined dubbel flavors and personality. Alky bite and barely any carbonation. Metallic and a little offensive at times. Better than Lagunitas 10 but not as good as Rare Voss.

Hand-bottle shared by TheBeerCellar: Pours a mostly still copper amber. Fresh, authentic, sweet caramel malt and peppery hop aroma. Body starts fairly full with a good toasty caramel malty sweetness and nice earthy spice complexity. A tasty and true to style Biere de Garde.

Draft, Church Brew Works. Pours a hazy, brownish-amber color; no head left. Plenty of cola and toasted malts in the aroma; slightly metallic. Medium mouthfeel: plenty of cola and chewy malts, with average carbonation and a doughy / bready presence throughout; very drinkable. Medium, cola and lightly toasted finish.
