COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION Our next specialty beer is a California Common, also known as Steam Beer. This style is brewed with lager yeast and fermented at ale yeast temperatures. This practice dates back to the late 1800’s, when California’s warm temperatures prevented proper fermentation of lager yeasts. Another name for this type of beer is “Steam”, a trademark that Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco now holds. Some say the name Steam is derived from the hissing sound produced by the pressure released when a cask is tapped; others say it is a reference to the original source of the breweries’ power. Our version of California Common is orange to amber in color. You will also notice pleasing floral hop bouquet. Because of the hybrid fermentation, the beer will have some of the roundness of a lager, the fruitiness of an ale and a high natural carbonation. Characteristic for the style, a hop bitterness will be evident in the finish that will balance out the medium body.
