COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The style is a Munich Helles. Munich is the German city where the style originated and "helles" is German for "light" as in color not low calorie. Therefore, this is a German style light-colored lager. It has some similarities with the Pious Monk Dunkel. Remember, the Dunkel is a Bavarian beer (or Munich beer more specifically), and dunkel is German for dark. This beer can also be compared and contrasted with the Celestial Gold. The Gold is a German Pilsener in style and "What the Helles" is a German Helles. Both are light colored lagers so they have a crisp clean finish. The maltiness of the Helles is a bit bigger than that of the Gold, and the hoppiness is a bit lower as well. The helles style is becoming one of the most popular beer styles in southern Germany.

On-tap at the Church Brewworks. Bright clear gold with a thin snow-white head. No lace to speak of. Smells of sweet pale malt. Some light German hops but mostly sweet malt. Taste is a sweet and slick pale malt. A bit of balancing hops but not much. Thicker tasting than it would appear. Finishes very clean, no real aftertaste at all. This is a nice beer, an easy drinker. Nothing complex, just pleasant and tasty.

I had this right after having their brown ale, and I didnt get much out of this one. It had a good complection and aroma, but it was a little too underpowered. It had now real mouthfeel to it other than a passin oily feel. The end indeed was clean, but not crisp.

Good golden color with a nice smooth taste, not much hops to overpower it. Very good.

A pleasant, crisp helles. Golden in color with a mild head which settles. Mild amount of malt and hop make for a delicious crisp beer.
